COUGAR COURIER
September 28, 2018
From the desk of Principal Ruiz
This week our CIA Cougars celebrated College Go! Week. We appreciate the enthusiasm of our scholars and their participation in the daily spirit week activities.
Picture day is Friday, October 5th. Scholars that are purchasing school pictures may be out of school uniform on October 5th. Parents may purchase a picture packet online (details for online purchasing are included in the School Picture link) or exact change may be sent with the scholars. Picture packets were sent home on Thursday of this week.
This week, our first grade scholars will participate in Vision Screening. Parents will be notified only if their scholar's vision screening indicates a concern.
With scholars in mind,
Ms. Angela Ruiz, Ph.D. Candidate, Ed.S.

Bus Safety
Board the bus safely. Scholars should walk, not run, to the bus stop. While waiting for the bus, scholars should stay in a safe spot away from the road. Remind your scholar(s) never to never speak to strangers at the bus stop. When the bus arrives, scholars should wait their turn to board and never push or shove on the stairs. Scholars should ask the driver for help if they drop something while getting on or off the school bus. Follow the driver’s rules. Explain to your scholar(s) that drivers have to focus on the road to keep scholars safe. Distracting the driver, even for a second, could put all scholars in danger. Remind scholars to treat drivers with respect. Scholars should never throw things on the bus or out the windows, or play with emergency exits. Scholars should know to use their “inside voices,” and never play loud music on the bus. Watch for bullying behavior. Alert the bus driver if your scholar is being harassed on the bus. School bus drivers are not counselors, but they are here to transport scholars safely. Our bus drivers are dedicated to finding a solution if a problem arises.
Avoid the “danger zone.” Scholars should wait for the bus to come to a complete stop before getting off the bus, and use the handrails. When crossing in front of the bus, scholars should take five giant steps away from the bus, make eye contact with the driver, and cross when the driver indicates that it is safe. Remind your scholar to look both ways before crossing, and to stay away from the wheels of the bus.
Riding the bus to school is a privilege. Any inappropriate behavior may lead to scholars being removed from the bus temporarily; persistent discipline issues will result in permanent removal from the bus.

Battle of the Books
Yes, it is time to begin the after school Battle of the Books Club. This is a club for 6th - 8th grade scholars who love to READ! Battle of the Book meeting will be held every week during the school year. During the meetings, scholars will read the required books, engage in book discussion and prepare for the annual Battle of the Books competition that will be held in May, 2019. The requirements for participation include:
•Attend Battle of the Book Club meetings each Wednesdays from 4:10 to 5:30. Meetings are scheduled to begin on Wednesday, October 10.
•Have pre-arranged transportation from school at 5:30 p.m. (door 5) on meeting days. Scholars who are not picked up by 5:50 will be moved to door 17 and will ride the activity bus, if their ride has not arrived by 6:00 PM.
•Read no less than five of the books from the list of approved titles; there are 20 books to choose from.
•Maintain passing grades and good character throughout the school year.
Scholars may participate in Battle Club as athletes. Ms. Simpson will work with scholars, parents and coaches to ensure participation in the Book Club does not hinder athletic activity.
Interested scholars should see Ms. Simpson or access the permission slip in the link below..
Gather your Box Tops to raise money for CIA
Yes, it is true...if our CIA families collect box tops, we earn money.
Here is how this works: CIA families, every time you use a General Mills product, cut off the BoxTop label and send it to school with your scholar. 400 scholars X 10 BoxTops per scholar = $400 for CIA! This is a fantastic opportunity because there is no need to purchase anything special. Many families end up with General Mills products in their homes after a trip to the store. We encourage each family to ask your friends, relatives and neighbors to do the same. Begin your search for the Box Top label! A collection box will be placed in the main office; please send all labels to school with your scholar.
Items from the Athletic Fundraiser are on their way!
All items from the athletic fundraiser will be delivered to Clay International Academy on October 3rd. Please make arrangements to help your scholar transport the items home. If you have concerns or questions, please contact Ms. T. Matlock.
Thank you for supporting the CIA athletic program.
A Salute to Veterans
Did you know that November 11th marks the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended WWI? November 11th was selected as Veteran's Day because of the significance of the treaty that was signed on this day, 100 years ago. This year will be our 99th Veteran's Day! If you would like to spend some time learning about the end of WWI with your scholar, click here.
The CIA Cougars aim to honor those who fought during WWI and who are currently members of any branch of the US Military. Please email the names of your family members that have served or are currently serving in any of the Armed forces to Mrs. Pol so that we may include them in the recognition ceremony that will take place on Monday, November 12, 2018.
