In a traditional model of teaching, the teacher is the source of knowledge. Learning is based on one-dimensional materials that are directly connected to curriculum content and skills. Today’s resources however, are digital, interactive, and visually rich; a stark contrast to rather lengthy text description of topics and themes. Students are now at the centre of their learning and use today’s technology and resources in ways very different from traditional learning materials. They access multiple sources, customize material to suit their needs, mix various media to create new learning, and then share it with unlimited peers through their social networking sites. We Bring the Festival to You
The Maryland STEM Festival, Inc. (MSF) has been established to operate the Festival. The mission of the Festival is to encourage all students regardless of background and experience to take a greater interest in STEM with the hope they will pursue a STEM related/focused career.
The MSF works for an entire year recruiting as many organizations as it can to participate in the Festival, such as libraries, museums, public and private schools, colleges, universities, government agencies and private companies.
What is STEM?
While some see STEM in a very narrow light, MSF sees STEM in the broadest of terms. We see it including all areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. That means, it may include robotics, agriculture, biotechnology, zoology, or cybersecurity. We see STEM is every aspect of life. We feel many people do not realize all the ways they interact with STEM.
Maryland STEM Festival Spotlight
In 2019 we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 landing on the moon (July 19, 1969) and the 60th Anniversary of the Goddard Space Flight Center (March 1, 1959) by designating the Festival's theme as "Space and Flight". Events are encouraged, but not required to use the theme. These are broad topics that cover an enormous number of areas. Animals, Insects, and other living things fly. Numerous health and medical advances have been made by research conducted in Space. Be Creative!
The Maryland STEM Festival Board of Directors include:
- Sam Cohen, NEA
- Marty Leshin, Varentech, Inc.
- Phil Rogofsky, Maryland STEM Festival
- Weida Steocker, Maryland Department of Agriculture
- Dorothy Stotlz, Carroll County Public Library
- Zulma Whitford, St. Louis School

The Trick-Or-Treat Scratch Halloween Game
"With Halloween quickly approaching, we've had many requests inside our Facebook group for teachers, for a Halloween Scratch lesson. As I started to jot down a few ideas, my 11 year old who loves Scratch and is always interested in what I'm doing, started busily working on his own computer. He came up with the game below all on his own! He then asked that I share it with the group to see if this is something they would like to teach their students how to create. The response, as I expected, was overwhelmingly positive. So, I promised I'll put the lesson together as soon as I'm done with the Scratch Coordinate Plane post, and here we are....
The short video below covers how we expect this game to work. I always start with this type of introduction when teaching my students how to create a new game in Scratch. Feel free to play the introduction below for your own students. I recommend stopping the video and using the arrow keys to progress through it. That works best for me as it allows me to speak and move at my own pace, while I'm running it. " - by Maytal Bendavid, Create Code Load
