Emerald Ash Borer

Scientific Name

The scientific name for the Emerald Ash Borer is Agrilus plannipenis. In short terms, its called EAB.

Physical Description

An Emerald Ash Borer is bright, metallic, emerald green color overall, with the elytra (wing cover) a slightly darker green and dull. It is very small, only 10 to 13 mm, Or 1 to 1.3 cm.


The Emerald Ash Borer is native to Eastern Asia.

How did it get to America ?

It was brought to America by firewood or other wood products containing Ash tree bark.

Where was the Emerald Ash Borer last seen ?

Last seen in Pennsylvania, New York, Michigan, West Virginia, New Hampshire, Maryland, Rhode Island, Florida, and Ohio.

Damage ?

The Emerald Ash Borer feeds on ash trees and kills the branches, eventually killing and/or damaging the whole tree. The larvae are placed under the ash tree bark, once hatched, they feed on the bark.

What will we do stop them ?

One way we're trying to eliminate EAB's is by injecting Ash trees with chemicals. People say it is the most effective way because the chemicals stay in the tree even after along time after the injection.
