Community of Readers - Only 14,062 Books to Go!
The Benefits of Lifelong Reading
This week we recommitted our efforts to grow students into lifelong readers by reopening our media center. A schedule was created to accommodate only one class at a time and students were required to sanitize their hands upon entry into the library. Books will be quarantined upon return, consistent with the recommendations from the OCLC (Online Computer Library Center) which is a global library cooperative.
We know that the benefits of reading are lifelong and include mental stimulation, general knowledge, larger vocabulary, stronger analytical skills, improved mental focus and better writing skills.
Help support healthy reading habits in our students by participating in our "Community of Readers" Initiative. Our goal is to read 15,000 books between March 1st and May 21st. I want to thank those who have submitted titles including our Cedar Grove Families, James from High School East and Liam and Lila from Lavallette Elementary. Let's keep spreading the word! (And read a LOT over spring break!)

Light It Up Blue for Autism
Thursday -- Wear Blue to Support Autism Awareness
Here are some highlights from the responses submitted:
"What I will do to support autism awareness this year is by helping kids with autism -- To help them with things that might be hard for them to understand and remind them that its ok to be different."
"I will make sure that everybody will be treated the same and equal. Just because you have a disability does not make you different from others. We are all the same and we all have feelings. We should all be nice and respectful to others."
"I would like to make everyone aware that people with autism are just like everyone else. We need to treat them the same and make them feel included. When someone with autism looks like they are having a tantrum it is really a meltdown. They have different ways of dealing with problems. I would try to calm them down and become their friend."
"I will support Autism Awareness this year by becoming friends with them because in the video it said that "People with Autism have a hard time with making friends." So I will become friends with them."
Special Area Enrichment - Revised Calendar
Student Choice in Enrichment Activities
Click on the Revised Enrichment Calendar for the schedule and live links. Initial feedback on our enrichment classes has been positive, and we encourage students to take advantage of this opportunity! If students choose to attend an enrichment class, be sure to attend only at a time that is not previously scheduled with a classroom teacher, ESL teacher, basic skills teacher, G/T teacher or resource room teacher.
