There was a launch pad test when a fire caught. The three men couldnt open the door so they died just on a trial day. This is why we have many trials before we go into space.

President John F. Kennedy announced that NASA was going to try to send a man to the moon and return him safely.This meant they were going to put a man on the moon.The Apollo moon project was a massive effort that required a huge amount of money that would cost about $25.4 billion in 11 years.
The Apollo missions and tests
Altogether there were 33 missions but the first 17 were not called apollo they just had names.The only unmanned Apollo missions that were truly known as the apollo were Apollo 4, Apollo 5 and Apollo 6. But there were many other missions with no people in them and they had test flights in the early stages of the program.
Sucessful mission
On July 20, 1969 the program got to thier goal when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on the Moon.The program ended in 1972 after all of the successful moon landings.
