Uniform Reminders

UNIFORM REMINDERS:

1. Show shirts are part of the band uniform. Your students are often required to have them. PLEASE have your student show you their shirt so you know they know where it is. We do not have extra's; they were told by the Directors that they could not lose them as they are part of their uniform. They were told the day they picked them up to label them (we had sharpies for them).

2. LABEL everything. This is the only way we can attempt to return lost items to their owners.

3. There is a massive pile of lost & found items at the back of the instrument locker room and guard room. Have your student look for lost items there.

4. Please ask your students if they somehow ended up with an extra shoe or show shirt or polo & return the extra items.

5. Talk to your students about keeping everything in their duffels. We see clothes & shoes everywhere & this leads to lost items.

6. Required items for any event are listed on the schedules that are emailed out. Please share with your students so they are prepared with the necessary items.

7. If your student does not have a uniform item on the list, and IF we have those items in inventory, you will be invoiced for that replaced item. We do not have any inventory that students can just borrow.

CALL TO HELP!

Thank you to all of the parents who came into the band hall during practice times these past two weeks to help with the gold silks, spray paint and fix hats, and build chips! Those details have added to our already amazing production and wouldn't have been possible without you!

This week we will need the following help:

TUESDAY:

  • Pit Crew: Unloading the PROP trailer at 4:15pm (come as soon as you can get there)
  • Pit Crew: We will need help AFTER PRACTICE storing props in the SCHOOL while the district does maintenance on our trailers before we head out to Indianapolis!
  • Build crew: Place adhesive vinyl on both sides of the foam board (Please see Don)

  • Uniform Crew: WASHING and PRESSING and FIXING THE STIRRUPS/BEADS ON THOSE STINKY UNIFORMS!

THURSDAY:

  • Pit Crew: Loading the PROP trailer AFTER PRACTICE to be ready for the Friday game.

VOLUNTEERS / ANYONE COMING TO BAND HALL

We have been told by JHS Admin that if you arrive at the school during the school day (before 4:10 pm), you need to CHECK IN at the front office (as opposed to Ms. Mendez office). If you arrive during the school day but leave after school is out, you can check OUT in Ms. Mendez office.

If you are on campus anytime outside of the school day, you must CHECK IN and CHECK OUT in Ms. Mendez office with her scanner. Be sure to wear your volunteer badge at all times. If you do not have a badge, please email Ms. Mendez to get that process going.

From the Director

And just like that, another week has gone by.

This past week we saw the Hays CISD Band Festival which was a huge success! What a great way to give back to our community, a free event that featured all three Hays CISD high school bands and all six of the Hays CISD middle school 7th and 8th grade band students. The event was incredibly well-attended and was an awesome opportunity to showcase our wonderful music programs and students.

The Hays Band Festival was followed the very next night by Middle School Band Night for Johnson High School. This was an opportunity for our Dahlstrom middle school and McCormick middle school eighth-grade band students to sit side-by-side and perform with the Johnson Jaguar Marching Band in the stands of the football game. What a great opportunity to get to allow those students to experience the excitement of Friday night lights. Although it was a Thursday night game the environment and experience were still exciting! What better way can we start to build the future of the Jaguar Band than by developing those relationships and creating excitement with our future Jaguar Band members from those two wonderful campuses.

As if that wasn’t enough in one week, we followed that up with our trip to the BOA Waco Regional. To say that our performance in Waco was successful, would be an understatement. We had hoped to move above our placement from last year, and we not only achieved that goal, but exceeded it as well. After finishing fourth in finals last year, the Jaguar Band moved up and finished second in finals this year. This placement put us ahead of two incredible programs that our Jaguar Band had never beaten prior to the BOA Waco regional. Although this was an incredible success, and we celebrate with our students, families and community, we have to continue to move forward for even greater challenges yet to come this season.

This week we start the week with two days off from school on Monday and Tuesday. Although we do not have school on Tuesday, we do have rehearsal from 5:00 - 8:00. These remaining rehearsals are incredibly important and we need every student there, focused and ready to work at their highest level!!

Speaking of rehearsals, we are super excited to bring in Mrs. Joni Perez as a consultant for Tuesday and Wednesdays rehearsals. Mrs. Perez is the former Director at the Woodlands HS, and whose band has won the BOA Grand National Championships. We look forward to her guidance and input to help us along our journey as we venture and make our way towards our BOA Grand Nationals performance.

We are also looking towards our last football game performance of the season this Friday at Westlake High School. We are excited to get to see the Westlake Marching Band, and to share our Jaguar Band’s performance with their parents and community.

Following the football game Friday will be the USBands Austin Finale Marching Festival held at Kelly Reeves Stadium in Round Rock. The Johnson Jaguar Band is the 2021 reigning CHAMPION of the USBands Austin Finale, and we are looking forward to continuing that standard of performance. A detailed schedule for both of these events will be sent out Wednesday morning.

Let’s enjoy the time off we have this weekend and let’s have an awesome upcoming week as we continue to work hard and make history with our Johnson Jaguar Marching Band.

As we end each week’s newsletter please remember that be it today or tomorrow: “It’s a Great Day to be a Jaguar!”

The Beat--A weekly update for Percussion specific information

Wow! Just wow! So proud of the students and their work this past week. It was a crazy busy week that culminated in another magical night. This is a special group and I absolutely can’t wait to see how this chapter ends. We need to keep working hard these last 2 weeks. And once again, attendance is crucial as we continue to put the finishing touches on the show. Make sure you are there and healthy. Please take care of yourselves, practice good hygiene, etc. We need everyone doing their part!

I sent a google form out regarding PASIC during our trip to Indianapolis. Please make sure you fill that out by this coming Tuesday so I can submit all the names. Remember this is going to cost $30 per person to attend. Here is the link:

Color Guard Updates

Thank you for all of the bobbie pin and snack donations!

REMINDER: Please start checking your student's guard items in case they need gloves, jazz shoes, etc.. As we shared at the last booster meeting, your student shows up without uniform items (and assuming we have those in inventory), you will get invoiced for the items they needed. We do not "loan" these types of items. If they forget them, you will have to pay for them. Some of you will see invoices coming your way soon from previous games and competitions.

FUN FACTS about US Bands Finale:

  • Unlike BOA and many other marching competitions, USBands awards "Best Color Guard". This award will be awarded to the ensemble with the highest score awarded by the Color Guard adjudicator.
  • USBands' classification for participating ensembles is based on the total number of performers, not the size of the student population at their school. This count includes playing members, auxiliary (color guard, majorettes, etc.), and command personnel (drum majors, guard captains, etc.). Moe and Gene's classification at USBands will be Open-V (O-V). There are two bands in this classification.
  • Much like BOA competitions, US Bands finals is comprised of the top scoring bands, regardless of classification. US Bands selects the top 10 bands to compete at finals.

If you have questions about uniforms, invoices, etc., please don't hesitate to reach out to us at colorguard@johnsonbands.com or president@johnsonbands.com.

Service Hours

The JHS Band Boosters have created a form for band students to track their band volunteer service hours. (Click the previous sentence to link to the form.) This form is similar to what is used by other organizations such as the NHS and puts control of volunteer service hours tracking in the students hands. Students should print and use this to log for all band related volunteer service hours and ensure completion of all fields including supervisor signature. Parents signatures are not accepted. Follow all details on the form to turn in the logs in the spring to be considered for Band Student Service Awards at the Band Banquet or for logging volunteer service for Letterman Jacket points. Any questions, contact banquet@johnsonbands.com or secretary@johnsonbands.com. This form should be used for all hours since the Band Banquet last spring. Multiple forms may be submitted to track all of your volunteer service.
