MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
As we move into 2019, it is a great time to discuss goal setting with your children. Many teachers will be discussing the students' academic or social goals for the school setting. Expanding this conversation to goals for home or personal goals is a great way to discuss the importance of "Beginning with the End in Mind (Habit 2)" with your children at home. See the Leader in Me section of this newsletter for tips on how to get started with the discussion.
Take care,
Dr. Delgado

NEWS FROM THE OFFICE
- Label all outer wear!!! This really does help when we have 360 students. Items get left behind regularly.
- With cold and flu season upon us please keep in mind that when your child is running a fever and/or vomiting, they must remain home for 24 hours. They may return to school when they have been fever free and/or vomit free for 24 hours without medicine. Thank you for your cooperation with keeping all students healthy. Please remember to call the attendance line (313) 432-4201 if your child will be out. Leave your child's full name and reason for absence. Thank you.
LEADER IN ME UPDATES
Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind is a great way to reflect on goal setting with kids. At school we focus on academic goals, but at home this is a great opportunity to talk with your kids about what they would like to improve on in their personal lives. Here are a few questions you can use to help start the conversation around personal goals.
Personal Goals:
When you aren’t in school, what makes you feel the happiest (are you most passionate about)?
Would you like to get better at a sport, instrument, dance, etc.?
Are you respectful to siblings/friends/parents?
Do you treat others as you would like to be treated?
There are great places to start when beginning the discussion of goals with your child. Once the 2019 goals have been set, it would be beneficial to revisit them regularly, check in with your kids on their progress, and modify or change them as necessary. Feel free to ask if you have any questions or would like more information on goal setting with elementary-aged kids.
LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS
As part of our Leader in Me initiative, student groups and clubs will start popping up throughout the school year. Some of the clubs will be a longer commitment, but at times they may involve a 2-3 week initiative in which students can volunteer their participation as student leaders.
Your child will be bringing home in their folder the first of these short term club opportunities for the school year. The application is for the Kindness Club. It will be sponsored by Mrs. Randazzo and the students will meet during lunch 1-2 times a week for 3 weeks. They will be helping to create and organize activities for GPPSS Great Kindness Challenge initiative.
This is a wonderful, optional opportunity for students to demonstrate capacity in leadership. Look for the application in your child's folder.
PEACH JAR FLYERS
Flyers moving to Peachjar
At the start of this new year we are transitioning to Peachjar – a mobile friendly platform for non-profit flyers used by many of our peer districts. This replaces our online posting on the website, and makes community events more accessible to our families at a nominal fee for non-profits.
IMPORTANT: If you do not wish to be included in the email list for Peachjar, please click here to unsubscribe from Peachjar ONLY by Friday, January 4. This will not unsubscribe you from our emergency notifications. Filling out the simple form will prevent GPPSS from sharing your email with Peachjar for flyer notifications that will be used by our schools and groups as well as local nonprofits (what you used to see in backpacks before we went green). You can also check it out first and unsubscribe at any time.
