Parkhill Primary School Newsletter
Issue 16, Friday 19 June 2020
Dear Parents/Carers
It is clear to say that this has been the most unusual term in my teaching career. In the history of education in modern times. The change to remote learning and then followed by reentry to school has been an extraordinary experience for all of us and I would like to extend my thanks again to everyone.
Across the school the children have settled back into the routines and structures and the classrooms are a busy hive of learning.
You will be aware, I am sure, that we have chosen to employ some Casual Relief Teachers these past two weeks. This is to help us gather as much assessment data from the students on return to the classroom as possible. The purpose of this data collection is to identify any misconception, regression in learning or needs that have occurred as a result of the remote learning period.
Reports will be coming home soon and will look a little different this time. They will be emailed directly to you rather than a paper copy coming with your child. The reports will contain achievement and progress comments from term 1 and statement of content delivered in term 2. A cover letter will explain the difference. We plan to hold Parent/Teacher interviews early in term 3 if by that stage we are able.
I understand that the drop off and pick up arrangements cause some annoyance at the moment. It is important for us all to be flexible during these times. I have posted the signage below for your information which explains the parking and stopping rules for the front of the school. As you can see it is a no stopping zone on school days from 8:30 am - 9:30 am and then from 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm. The 2 minute park only applies to before school for drop off as this is our allocated drop off zone. We do not have a pick up zone therefore you need to park and walk to collect your children, or arrange an alternative pick up point. This is for the safety of the children at the front of the school. Please help us to keep all of our students safe and honour the signage. I was quite shocked at the response I received from some parents last week when I pointed out the signage to them.
It is so important that we role model safe and sensible use of the local area to our children.
It continues to be important to note that if children are showing any signs of being sick they must stay home.
If you have any questions or feedback for us please do let me know brady.elaine.e@edumail.vic.gov.au
Have a super fun weekend
Best wishes,
Elaine Brady

Inquiry Maths
This week in Y5/6 students have been designing their own ‘Tiny Dream Homes’. We have been applying our knowledge of area and perimeter to ensuring that all of our furniture and appliances will fit within the small 4m x 2m frame. It has been great to see students realise that their initial designs did not take into consideration the scale of the building or furniture and then to have to problem solve using their knowledge of area to reorganise the space.

Y5/6 TeacherPolicy update - June 2020
Policy committee met recently and reviewed two policies, and completed a check up on our consolidation of Child Safe Standards. We reviewed the Child Safety Risk Register to observe any potential risks that may present in regards to child safety and how we might best mitigate these risks. It was felt we could promote the Child Safe Standards more, so in that regard please have a read of the Four Critical Actions. The Actions are a summary of the Child Safety policy, detailing what staff will do in the incidence of a disclosure. The Child Safe Standards Code of Conduct was reviewed and refreshed, as well as the Anaphylaxis policy.
Don’t forget that you can join the policy committee at any time - if you’ve got an eye for detail it might be the (second) job for you!
You can find all policies on the school website at

Dear Families,
The best gift any parent can give a child is the love of books and the joy and benefits of independent reading for fun. Children who read at home, or are read to, have a head start on reading success in school.
Our school is participating in Scholastic Book Club this year, starting in term 3. Up to twice a term, during the school year, we will send home the Book Club catalogue with a different selection of books offered for all ages.
You’ll find award-winning books and bestsellers, as well as old and new favourites. We recommend them because the books span a wide range of children's reading levels and interests and are inexpensive (some books cost as little as $2).
It is easy to order. The Book Club LOOP platform for parents allows you to pay by credit card. Your child’s order is submitted directly to school and the books will be delivered to class. We will provide instructions on how to order once we are set up.
Our school benefits too! Every Book Club order earns Scholastic Rewards, which help us purchase additional learning and literacy resources, however there is no obligation to order. We know of no better way to encourage reading than to allow children to choose the books they want to read.
If you have any questions or would like more information, please email Angelita (williams.angelita.a@edumail.vic.gov.au).
Stay tuned for your first Book Club issue early next term!
