ADVANCED PLACEMENT SUMMIT JUNE 25
We are looking forward to hosting our first annual A.P. Summit sponsored by the College Board on June 25 from 9:15-3:15 at Columbia Hickman High School. The theme for the one day event is, "Growing Advanced Placement." The event is geared toward A.P. teachers, A.P. Coordinators, and Administrators. Here is a framework for the day:
- Teacher Resources and A.P. Coordinator Supports
- A.P. Program vs. A.P. Classes
- A.P. Potential
- Best Practices
- Challenges
- Lunch/Keynote
- Breakout sessions specific to A.P. teachers, coordinators, and administrators
- Distribute A.P. Toolkits
Registration will be $89.00. More information will be forthcoming with registration links and a school/district pre-conference survey. Make plans to attend this one-day event here in Columbia, Missouri. Take a moment and alert your A.P. faculty of this opportunity.
We have been in contact with Ed Leaders Network, who oversees our MoASSP Online Community. They should have all members uploaded by the end of the business day today. Give the system 24 hours to update. Thanks for your patience as we roll out this new collaborative tool for all of our members. We encourage you to post a question. How about uploading a resource to the library to benefit the community? Or, only, connecting with a colleague. As a reminder, only MoASSP members have access to the community. Check it out today.
NASSP ACTION ALERT LAST WEEK
Thanks to those who notified their Representative last week regarding the vaping action alert. Nationally, there were 723 advocates and 2,247 emails, tweets, and calls using the action alert. How did Missouri principals do in notifying their representatives? We finished fourth. Minnesota had the most advocates, followed by Massachusetts, and then Illinois. The link to the alert from last week is still live, and it's been updated to connect advocates with their Senators. Now we need to use the campaign to compel the Senate to pass H.R. 2339 / S. 3174.
LEGISLATIVE UPDATE
Several HARMFUL BILLS are moving through the House and Senate. The Legislative Bulletin was just sent a little while ago. Check your email. The Bulletin is mailed each Friday to members only. Bulletin is your best source for keeping up with all the action in Jeff City. It looks like we may need to do another alert first part of next week. Stay tuned.
CORONAVIRUS
Principals are trained and hired to think of things that could go wrong before they do. The key for principals is to be proactive and calm through it all. I have included several links below as you navigate through this moment in time. Dr. Tom Cummings, a longtime superintendent for NKC Schools, would often say, "This too shall pass." Keep this in mind as you lead your school and community during this unique time.

CHARACTER STRONG EDUCATOR TRAININGS
The one day training is an interactive experience that provides the tools and framework to effectively build a safe and positive campus culture. Character Strong focuses on the "how-to" of weaving social-emotional learning and character development into the daily fabric of your school. One part professional development, one part personal development - it will be one of the most meaningful and practical trainings you've ever attended.
The Missouri Association of Student Councils continues to partner with Character Strong to bring these training days to Missouri educators. We believe it is the best SEL program in the country and will change the culture of a building! Schools all over Missouri have adopted Character Strong and are seeing the benefits.
This training is a great way to finish up the school year and begin planning for 2020 - 2021. Character Strong has curriculum for K - 5 (Purposeful People), 6 - 8 and 9 - 12 (Advisory), a Leadership Curriculum, and the Character Gym (filled with educational resources and tools, updated regularly). Students never see the same lesson twice and you can choose to implement however you want! Character Strong also has ongoing resources, in the form of: podcasts, webinars, and online/virtual instruction.
Check out this link for registration. Discounts are available for teams. Free samples of all levels are available for you to view here. You can also reach out to Terri Johnson, MASC Executive Director.
