TAX CREDIT
Please consider making a Tax Credit donation. The Arizona tax credit program (A.R.S. 43-1089.01) allows a tax credit of up to $200 for individuals and up to $400 for married couples, filing jointly, in support of extracurricular activities. The tax credit reduces your tax burden to the state of Arizona, dollar for dollar. It also reduces your taxable income to the federal government, usually by 1/3 of your donation. You can submit online here or in the front office.
Crossing Guard Needed - contact Kathy at 623-376-3700 for information.
All Things E.Q.
Here's to a wonderful 2019!
The motto this week in school is:
I choose what I believe about myself.
The goal this week is to encourage students to examine what they believe about themselves, especially when they hear unkind remarks from other people. Just because a person says something unkind about us, does not make it true.
When I grew up, I was told I was bad at math and I believed it. This caused me to dislike math. Surprisingly, in college, my math professor asked me if I would consider teaching math. I laughed and said, "No, because I'm terrible at math."
My college professor said, "There are 75 students in this class, and four people earned an A. You are one of them. Why do you think you're bad at math?"
My professor's observation was eye-opening because it made me realize I was holding onto someone else's opinion. Perhaps I was bad at math for a time, but certainly not forever. I wish I questioned that belief sooner because it would have increased my confidence.
Taking a moment to examine the opinions we have about ourselves is important. Some good questions to ask ourselves are:
"Is this even true, and if so, will it always be true?”
or
"Will this opinion help me become the best version of myself?"
The new year is an excellent time to think about our opinions about our children. I know growing up my siblings and I all knew how our parents saw us. The studious one, the outgoing one, the athletic one, etc.
I'd like to think my own family was better, but I have to admit we told our youngest daughter how clumsy she was and how she was always getting injured. It is very likely that she was simply the youngest and this was only true in comparison to her older siblings.
True or not, is having that belief and repeating it, helpful? Did our opinion give her more confidence or less? I hope that when my kids hear opinions from other people, they examine them and know they do not have to accept them as their own. Especially if the opinions are not helpful.
Here's to choosing our own beliefs about ourselves and choosing wisely!
Wishing You the Happiest and Healthy New Year!
