Stilwell Monday Message

Weekly Student and Family Communication

Monday - 3/29/2021

Good Morning Stilwell students and families,

Today is an odd day.

On Friday, April 2nd, online students will need to arrive at Stilwell by 8:45 for ISASP testing. On-site students will not have school this day.

We would like to remind our on-site students of the importance of good mask-wearing practices. This means you arrive at school with a mask that fits snuggly over your mouth and nose. Wearing a mask keeps all of us safe and able to come to school each day.

Erica Whittle - Principal

This week will be focusing on the appropriate use of cellphones. Please make sure to have both your nose and mouth covered. Teachers will be recognizing students with PBIS reward points.

Stilwell PTO

Tuesday, April 6th, 12pm

This is an online event.

Next week, Stilwell will hold a virtual PTO meeting through Zoom. We will be providing the link next Tuesday. Topics, we plan to discuss include the following...

  • ISASP testing
  • 2021-22 Building Schedule
  • Stilwell potential remodel plans
  • Stilwell PTO Plans 21-22

Mock Trial

Earlier this year we had 32 students participate in Mock Trial. It was an unusual year with practice and the competition online. They did such a wonderful job given the unique circumstances. Please congratulate all students for a job well done! Many Stilwell students earned awards for their outstanding performance as an attorney or witness, and in some cases both! Please Click Here to see our Mock Trial participants and those with outstanding performances.

Stilwell Donation Bin

The 2020-21 Student Council wanted to leave something behind that would allow us to leave a lasting impact on not just our school but our community as a whole. This is where the idea of the donation big originated. We wanted something permanent that Stilwell could use to help and benefit our local West Des Moines community. We, as a Student Council have been working to purchase a bin, customize it, and then set up fundraisers for it for several months now. We began by purchasing a donation bin from the Salvation Army that was going to be scrapped. Then, we were able to get a custom vinyl sticker printed for the bin. From there, we worked together to whitewash the sides of the bin to allow for student artwork to be the true centerpiece of the bin. We plan on allowing students a square to paint on the sides of the big to add a splash of color to our schoolyard, but also allow student creativity to flow and be able to be viewed by all of the community that helps us by generously placing donations in our bin.

Now that we have our bin set up and running, we just ask one thing of you! Each month our donations will be changing. Now, we are currently collecting used and new shoes for children in Sudan, as well as new personal care items for people in our own community. All we ask is if you have the means to donate and help people in our own community and worldwide we would love it if you would drop one of those above items into our donation bin. Thank you and we appreciate any way that you can help!

Parking Lot Protocol

We understand our parking lot drop-off and pick-up process can be time-consuming. However, we need all families to follow the procedures to ensure our students are safe. Please remember these guidelines:

  • Do not use the local business as a place to pick-up your child.
  • Do not drop off your student or stop for any reason along Vine Street.
  • Do not pull into the bus lanes along Vine Street.
  • Do not allow your student to exit the vehicle until you have pulled up to the curb in the parking lot.
  • Please drive slowly through the parking lot and on Vine St.

Reminder for In-Person Students

If your student is signed up this semester to be an “in-person” learner, your student cannot choose to learn “online” due to convenience, illness, or weather unless the district determines that we all move to online learning for that day. Students will be counted absent and will need a parent call to excuse.

This should be done in the usual way through our attendance line at 633-6000. You may leave a message 24 hours a day and we ask that you give your student’s name, student ID number, and what grade they are in so we may update their attendance. Thank you!

After the Bell

After the bell is an additional opportunity at the end of the day to get support with learning from a certified teacher. It will start on Tuesday, September 8th in the Stilwell cafeteria. Students will receive an additional snack using social distancing and are welcome to stay until 4:00 pm. After the bell will run each week Monday-Thursday. For more information please contact Mr. Peter Bissinger at
