Gator Bites- Back To School
CGE Weekly Newsletter- August 22, 2021
Welcome
Welcome to our weekly Gator Bites newsletter! Every Sunday evening our team at CGE will send out any important updates for the following week. Our goal is to be prepared, transparent and informative! We appreciate your time and urge you to read through carefully each week- especially during these unconventional virtual learning weeks.
Stay safe, stay informed and stay Gator Strong! đ
From the Principal's Desk:
We have heard from some members of our Gator family that they are not receiving the email messages we are sending out. We believe this problem is not limited to our school, but please also know that we are actively trying to problem-solve the issue. In the meantime, we are doing our best to post the messages on our website. Please also consider liking our Facebook page. We will repeat messages there and post fun pictures from around our school. Our Facebook address is: @ChathamGroveES
Our school mission this year is to be builders--building a better future for our children and community. We invite you all to join us in the ongoing process of âbuildingâ the most outstanding elementary school in the state. Our students deserve nothing less.
Carpool/Bus Riders/Walkers/Bikeriders Guidance:
We sent a message Friday regarding our arrivals and dismissal plans. Information regarding our plan may be found here.
Walking Students into the Building:
To reduce the risk of COVID transmission, we will not be able to have parents walk kids into the building on the first day of school. We will be following the same procedure as last year. Parents will also not be able to park in the parking lot and walk their kids to the entrance of the building. Parents must arrive on campus either as walkers/bike riders, via bus, or via car. We appreciate your understanding.
Car Tags:
If you think you may ever want to pick your children up in the car pool, you need car tags! We ask that you use the car tags you were issued last school year. If you need a replacement, need to add a child to your number, or are new to the school and need a new set, please email Bitsy Griffin (brgriffin@chatham.k12.nc.us) by noon with the following info.
indicate if you are new, need to add/remove a child from your car, or need a replacement
a list (first & last names) of all children in your family at CGE with the homeroom of one so I can deliver the tag.
If the tag is a replacement, and you remember the number, please include that. If you donât remember, I can find it!
Counselor's Connection:
BOY Benchmark Testing:
The following beginning of year testing will start the second week of school:
K-3 Reading (mClass): August 30th through September 20th
4-5 Reading (STAR): September 1st through September 20th
K-5 Math (STAR): September 1st through September 20th
The beginning of grade reading test (BOG) for third grade students will occur on September 8th.
ReFUEL Updates:
ReFUEL is a nonprofit 501(c)3 company that will be servicing our students experiencing hunger while school is not in session. We will send meals, snacks and toiletries for our students to enjoy at home for weekends and school breaks. This new program will discretely and confidently serve our students by providing delivery directly to their houses or designated location. Thanks to help from our Counseling Team, Social workers and Teachers, this is done anonymously and discretely.
If you feel that your child is not getting adequate nutrition at home on the weekends, we encourage you to apply. If at any time a student is having a difficult time getting their meals provided, we encourage you to participate. There is no cost to this program. Paper forms can be found in the counseling office. Forms are also linked below. The form can be turned in directly to the school counselor, Abby Kennedy. Feel free to email akennedy@chatham.k12.nc.us or call (919) 642-7069 Ext. 43240 with any questions or concerns.

Our CGE Summer Reading Olympics ran through 8/20. If you were recording your minutes on the Summer Reading Olympics form, there is no need to do anything else. If you used the CCS PDF form, please send that in by August 31. Forms can be given to the classroom teacher or brought to the library. There will be a green basket in one of the Return Books Here boxes for form collection. If you used the Beanstack app provided by the public library, please email me (brgriffin@chatham.k12.nc.us) with your childrenâs names and approximate minutes for each child. I want to make sure all our Summer Reading Olympians get entered on the School Leaderboard
