Rainbow Elementary Chess Newsletter

April 9, 2020

All Rainbow students are invited to play chess on Tuesdays after school at 2:30 p.m. Every student at Rainbow can access their free gold account on ChessKid.com through Clever. The Rainbow Recreation Chess Club will be meeting online on Tuesdays at 2:30 p.m. each week to play chess and invites you to join them! You can solve puzzles, play a robot, or learn more about chess through lessons. And, you can challenge your friends to a fast chess game (choose 5, 10, or 15 minute games) by going to Play vs Kid and see who is online to play. This Newsletter highlights how to access these different features on ChessKid.

ChessKid Tournaments

ChessKid sets up tournaments you can join each day. When you log on, look to the left for the "Upcoming Tournaments" icon and see what tournaments you can join. Various Rainbow groups like Recreation Chess Club or Intermediate/Advanced Team will set up their own tournaments for kids in that group. Here is an article telling you how to join tournaments on ChessKid.

To join tournaments, go to Play vs. Kid and click on the tournament you want to join at least 5 minutes before start time (you cannot join a tournament after it has started). The tournaments have various time controls and numbers of rounds, so be sure you can commit to playing for the duration before you join. When your round is over, you can watch other games still in progress. The next round will be paired when everyone has finished playing the current round, so stay online. Good luck!

Madison All-Girls Online Tournament

If you are a Madison girl with a ChessKid account you may already be added to our online Girls Chess Club which will be hosting its second All Girls tournament this Friday April 10th from 3-5 p.m. Just log on 5 minutes before the start time to join the tournament. Plan to be online for 4 rounds with a 15-minute time control per side. If you are not in the club, email Ms. Bartlett, and she will add you. We anticipate more elementary grade level girls participating in this Friday's tournament as many middle and high school girls will be participating in an online chess class.

Monday Night Hour of Chess 6-7 p.m.

Although Monday night meetings at the Madison Library have been canceled for the foreseeable future, we want to invite all our kids to log on to ChessKid on Monday nights from 6-7 p.m. The larger the number of kids who log on at the same time, the better the opportunities to play kids in your ratings range from across Madison. We hope to see you online!
