Online Learning on Snow Days

Big picture

1-4-23

Happy New Year! What a way to ring it in with this wild winter weather. There are some important things I need you to do today for your online learning day:

1. READ, READ, READ! You can read books in your bookbag, books you have at home, books on Raz or Epic, and do reading activities in eSpark or on Spelling City. Remember, I give star punches for books read & quizes you pass in Raz & Epic! Our new spelling words this week & next are contractions, you can begin to practice those in Spelling City.

2. MATH FACTS! Do your Explore Learning math fact activities until you get a green light. Remember, the goal is to be fast & fluent. Please also practice your math fact cards in your baggie, I will give quizes when we return to school. We will be grading from 0 to the small mix set for report cards (everything on the 1st side of your math facts card). You can also practice math facts on Freckle.

3. Choose a mix of activities from the checklist below. When you return to school we will be reviewing all that we have learned so far in 2nd grade and testing for report cards and do our mid-year growth testing in Fastbridge Learning. I have added some buttons below for education games you can practice (geometry, telling time etc.). You can also do activities in eSpark & Freckle for both reading & math.

4. Remember, usernames & passwords are on the back of your purple home folder.

HAVE FUN! Feel free to send me photos of your snow day activities.

Notes

Our Halloween celebrations will take place on Monday, October 31.. Your child may bring (not wear) a costume to school that day. Our school policy is such that your child may not bring anything inappropriate (for example-nothing that resembles a weapon). We’ll put our costumes on in the afternoon for the short parade.

Our class book is coming along nicely and we plan to complete our final drafts this week. Our goal is to mail them in by Friday so they will be completed and returned to us before Christmas. Please return the form if you have not yet done so, even if you choose not to order a copy. We will receive a free hardcopy of the book for our classroom if we turn in all forms. This has been a fun and exciting process!

End of the Quarter is Nov. 4th. There will be NO SCHOOL Monday, Nov. 7th for report card writing and teacher workshop.

October reading calendars should be completed, signed, and returned on Tuesday, November 1st.

Great job for those who have been reading and recording their home minutes on their reading calendars! Your child should be reading 30 minutes each night. (We will be counting those towards “steps” at school. 30 minutes equals 2 steps).

Poetry folders were sent home. Please have your child practice reading the 2 poems to you, add your parent signature, and return the poetry folders on Monday. At school we practiced reading the poems by adding expression and voice changes.

Based on your child’s spelling inventory results we have leveled them into “best fit” spelling lists. They will come home with the leveled list they have been placed into. This may change as we monitor their spelling progress.

Enjoy the beautiful weekend!

It has been a busy week learning new routines and procedures!

We are collecting $5.00 to help with the cost of class parties for the year. Please contribute when you are able.

We have been practicing reading stamina at school. We will spend some time practicing reading strategies here at school and determining your child’s good fit color level. A reading calendar for keeping track of your child’s reading minutes will come home soon.

If you have not yet sent in a white t-shirt with your child yet, please try to do so next week. We will be turning them into lab coats for science class (it can be new or used, it can even have writing on it because we can turn it inside out).

Reminder: Snack/milk costs $0.50 each. It comes out of your child’s lunch account. Students have a choice to purchase each day.

We’re off to a great start!
