First Grade Weekly Update
April 8, 2016
Weather
Unfortunately, our spring weather has not been very cooperative this past week. Hopefully all of these April showers will bring some May flowers and warmer days! We have been staying in for recess due to the inclement weather. I am inviting the students to bring in a favorite board game or card game on these rainy, wet days to play during recess.
PLEASE SEND A HEALTHY SNACK AND WATER BOTTLE WITH YOUR CHILD EVERYDAY!
Writing
I am excited to share with the students are new writing unit this month on poetry. We are reading some poetry books to show us a variety of samples and then the students are creating their own poetry journals. We look forward to sharing the finished products at open house on April 21.
Math
This week we launched our new unit on telling time and measurement. Throughout the month of April we will be working on telling time to the hour and half hour and then learning to measure objects using non standard units (blocks, unifix cubes, paperclips, pencils). This is a hands-on unit that allows for a lot of movement and a lot of fun! I encourage the children to try IXL at home and practice time and measurement skills on their computers in the evenings or on the weekends.
Fieldtrip
Just a reminder that we will be going on a field trip to the Morton Arboretum on May 25. If you have not returned the permission slip and the $6 please do so by Monday, April 11 so that I can send in the payment to the Arboretum and bus company. Thanks for your cooperation and involvement. I have received an overwhelming response for chaperones this year! I will need to contact the Arboretum to see what they suggest for the number of volunteers. Thank you so much for being a part of your child's learning.
