Richmond Recognition

To the students and families of Richmond Elementary, thank you for joining forces with Mr. Shaw and the Jump Rope for Heart Association, raising a whopping $1866.00!! We would also like to recognize our bus drivers for your efforts in transporting our students and keeping them safe on the way to and from school and activities. Thank you for making a difference today to create a better tomorrow!

From the Office...

  • Conferences are March 12, 13, and 15th. Please check your child's Friday folder this week for your conference notice and contact your child's teacher ASAP if you need to reschedule. Thank you!
  • Please remember to save Box Tops for Education, Richmond Food Pride receipts, and Teal's receipts. Richmond Elementary School received a check for $1000 from Richmond Food Pride!! Your efforts are certainly appreciated!!
  • Also, a reminder to call or email when students will be tardy or absent, then to sign them in or out when picking up early or dropping off late.

  • District policy states that when your child is out of school for three days due to illness, a doctor's note is required to return. We want to be certain your child is in good health to return to school.

  • Regarding outside play, our goal is to encourage ALL students to get outside through most of Minnesota's wintery weather. However, there will be times to keep students inside at PE, recess or before school. Here is a general reminder of our guidelines: Stay in if: Temperature in 0 or below, Wind chill of -10 or below, Accumulation of rain or sleet.

Title One Services


If your child is receiving Title services, Suzanne Schlangen (Title Intervention Teacher) will be available before or after your child's classroom conference on March 12th and 13th. Specific information about your child's reading and/or math progress will be available as well as resources to connect home and school. We look forward to connecting with you! If your child's conference is on March 15th, feel free to contact Suzanne to set a conference time.

Reading: Our World's Best Workforce Goal

As we continue to focus on our World's Best Workforce reading goals, we emphasize reading with your child. Parents are a child's first and most important teacher and the single most influential factor in his or her development. Research tells us that children are more likely to be on grade level when entering school if they have parents who read to them on a regular basis, beginning in early childhood.

General Reading Tips:

  • Read aloud every day. Make reading aloud part of your daily schedule.
  • Join the public library. Take your child to the library each week and let him/her choose several books to check out and take home.
  • Look at the pictures on the cover of the book. Ask your child to tell you what they think the book is about.
  • Read the title of the book to your child. Tell your child the names of the author and illustrator. Read several books by the same author or illustrator.
  • Talk about interesting words and words that rhyme while reading.
  • Use expression while reading the story. Change your voice as you read the dialogue of different characters.
  • Encourage your child to be an active listener and allow him/ her to ask questions, make personal connections, and add sound effects or motions. He/She will begin to remember the story and join in as you read, especially with repeated phrases.
