School Counselor Update

March 2015- Highland High School

ACT testing

All juniors took the ACT plus writing test as part of state testing on March 3rd. They will receive their scores 4-6 weeks after testing. Students who want to retake the test must sign up online at www.actstudent.org and pay the registration fee. Retakes are not required but encouraged if the student's potential college requires a higher score for admission or additional scholarship dollars. Please see a counselor if you have questions.

Senior Exit Meetings Coming Soon

Counselors will be meeting with Seniors in groups for senior exit meetings. During this meeting students will be completing a form letting us know their future plans. They will also complete a final transcript request and a SWIC transcript request if applicable.

Final transcripts will be sent out as soon as grades are finalized, posted and transcripts are processed. This is typically completed by June 15th.

AP Testing

Students who signed up and paid fees will be completing tests for Advanced Placement Courses May 4-8 and May 11-15. Final payment is due April 10th.

Be sure to contact potential college admission representatives to find out required transfer scores.

Registration Update

In late April, Counselors hope to meet with current juniors to finalize their schedules for senior year.

All other students will receive a class list this summer. Schedule changes will occur the first three days of school. Changes can only be made if a student did not request the scheduled course. Level changes require approval from teacher and parent.

SWIC Dual Credit reminders

Students enrolled in Composition or Statistics can earn dual credit at SWIC as long as they pass the appropriate portions of the COMPASS test or the receive the required ACT score.

Compass testing will be offered to students requesting Statistics and Composition for the 2015-2016 school year in Mid-April.

Public Speaking is NO longer dual credit with SWIC.

Summer- A Great Time to Visit Colleges

Students at every grade level should utilize summer months to focus on career and college searching. Summer is a great time to visit campuses and meet with admission representatives to get questions answered so decisions can be made during the Fall of Senior year. Typically we offer English and Math during the summer for credit recovery. Driver's Ed is also usually offered the month of June. More information will be sent to students who qualify.

PARCC Testing update

Thank you to everyone- students and teachers- who worked hard on the new state PARCC testing. We anticipate good scores based on the level of effort from our students. Great job to our staff who went above and beyond to follow standard testing procedures.

FAFSA support

Special thanks to Septembre from Illinois Student Assistance Commission for working with a few of our students and their parents in February to complete their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) forms. She also presented 2 parent nights to help explain the financial aid process and FAFSA line by line.
