Romeo and Juliet
Who is most at fault ?
I believe that Mercutio is that character who is most at fault in Romeo and Juliet for all of the problems. Mercutio and Benvolio are the ones who persuaded Romeo to go to the party where he had met Juliet. Mercutio then started the fight with Tybalt ending with him lying on the ground dead. Now because Tybalt killed Mercutio, Romeo went after Tybalt for revenge and got banned for killing Tybalt. Because of Romeo getting banned Juliet faked her death to not marry Paris resulting in Romeo killing himself because he was unaware it was fake. Juliet later wakes up to find Romeo dead and kills herself.
Shakespeare writes, " Tut, dun's the mouse, the constable's own word. If thou art dun, we'll draw thee from the mire, Or-- Save your Reverence-- love, Wherein thou stick'st Up to the ears. Come, we burn daylight, ho!"(1,4,40-44). Mercutio is telling Romeo he is being a stick in the mud because he doesn't want to go to the party. Mercutio is telling Romeo that he will pull him out of the mud to go to the party. He proceeds to yell come on we're burning daylight.
Mercutio says, "Tybalt, you ratcatcher, will you walk?"(3,1,46). Mercutio asks Tybalt if he will fight him. Tybalt asked why and Mercutio responds, "Good King of Cats, nothing but one of your nine lives, that i mean to make bold withal, and, as you shall use me hereafter, dry-beat the rest of eight. WIll you pluck your sword out of his pilcher by the ears? Make haste, lest mine be about your ears ere it be out."(3,1,47-53). Mercutio is telling Tybalt that he wants to kill him.
One might find Romeo most at fault. I looked even deeper than the surface showing that all of Romeo's actions have been influenced by Mercutio's actions. Yes Romeo is part of the problem but Mercutio is why he's done what he's done its all a chain reaction leading to Romeo and Juliet's death and it starts with Mercutio.
