Starting Off On The Right Foot

We are a month into school already and the school year has begun with great success! Students are ready to learn and are already showing that they want to work hard and be successful, this year. However, we also know that the newness of the new year may wear off soon for some students. This is very normal and there are a few things you can do to support your child each day. If you're student ever feels restless when doing homework, suggest that he get up and move to a new spot to work. For example, he might finish his homework at the kitchen table and then read his library book on the back porch. A planned break (maybe to have a snack or take a walk) can also give him a second wind. You may want to allow your child some time to wind down before starting homework. He just worked hard all day at school. If your child is getting stuck on assignments, help him write a list of strategies. For math, he can use a number line or number grid to help with math facts. For reading and vocabulary, he can use a dictionary to look up unknown words. Have phone numbers of friends handy, so he can call a friend to ask for help.

Getting up in the morning can also be a struggle for students (and parents). I suggest having an evening and morning routine every day. The night before pack the backpack, set out clothes and pack lunches. You can even have the breakfast items ready to go. Set the alarm clock a few minutes early so you have plenty of time to get up and ready for the day. There is nothing worse than running behind and rushing into the school day. Students may be sluggish and no longer jump right out of bed. The more routine that is in place, the easier it will be. If they are whining about going to school, make it clear that going to school is required and it's not a choice they get to make. The worse thing a parent can do is sympathize and give in to tired kids who don't want to come to school. This will create a very bad habit that they will try over and over. No one likes to get up in the morning, but once they get here they are fine.

If you are having severe issues with your child's motivation please contact the teacher or our school counselor. We can offer helpful hints or encourage your child.

Have a wonderful Labor Day LONG weekend!

COLLEGE GO WEEK!

Greetings Bunker Hill families! The week of September 21st, we will celebrate College Go Week! This is a week designed to get kids excited about going to college. Throughout the week we will feature different Indiana colleges and universities on morning announcements to start our Bulldogs thinking about their future! Then, on Friday, September 25th we will have a College Wear Spirit Day where students and staff can wear their favorite college or university spirit wear.

We encourage all families to take advantage of this week by chatting with your child about what it means to go to college, the awesome things that can happen in college, and all the possibilities that a college degree can bring!
