A Message From Our Principal
It's hard to believe, but we are in the final quarter of the school year. SES usually has a lot of activities and events planned for the end of the year, so please be sure to read through emails and newsletters from your child's teacher and the school to stay informed.
I want to invite all families to attend our "Rodeo Night" on Friday, April 26, from 5-8 PM. Our PTA has been working hard on planning and preparing for this event. This is our largest family event of the year and a great time for our school family to get together for games and activities for the students to enjoy. We hope to see you there! Further details regarding this event are located in this newsletter.
For some quick reminders:
- 3rd Quarter Report Cards will go home Wednesday, April 3.
- Please check out the Lost & Found if your child is missing any clothing items. It is currently overflowing with jackets, coats, sweatshirts, hats, etc. We plan to donate any items that are left next Thursday, April 11. So, please check before April 11 if your child is missing anything.
- School starts at 7:40. Fort Mill continues to grow, and so does the traffic. Please make any adjustments necessary to your morning drive to make sure your child arrives to school on time by 7:40, so they can have a great start to the school day.
- We open our doors at 7:10 for students to enter the building. Please keep your child in the car until the school doors open. We want to be sure students are safe, and our supervision for the car rider line does not begin until 7:10 each morning.
- The school will only release a student for dismissal to a person that you, the parent, has approved and added to the pick-up list. If you plan to have someone different pick-up your child from school, please verify with the office ahead of time that the person is on the pick-up list. Also, the person that is picking up your child will need a valid driver's license to sign them out.
- Online registration for the 2019-2020 school year for returning students will open the first week of May. Further details will be emailed closer to that time.
Please let me know if you have any questions or if I can be of assistance in your child's education. Thank you for your continued support of Springfield Elementary!
Sincerely,
Peter Olinger, Principal
Notes from the Nurse
Did you know that a school aged child needs on average 10 or more hours of sleep a night? With daylight savings time occurring last month it can take some time to get adjusted. The longer daylight hours can lead to increased demands in the evenings of family, sports, homework and not to mention supper. It is important to keep a night time routine and ensure your child is getting enough sleep at night. School performance can suffer if a child hasn’t had a good night’s rest and lack of sleep can lead to mood swings. Caffeine and electronics can also interfere with bed time routines and sleep. Since it is spring, enjoy the warmer weather and longer daylight hours, but remember to make time for sleep.
Wishing you happiness and good health!
Nurse Sova

Counselor's Corner
Dear Parents & Guardians,
In June of 2014, Section 59-32-20(B) of the South Carolina Code of Laws was amended to include age appropriate instruction in sexual abuse and assault awareness for all students in Pre-K through 12th grades as part of the Comprehensive Health Education Standards. Governor Nikki Haley signed into effect Section 59-32-30(G) of the law, otherwise known as Erin’s Law.
Although it has always been a South Carolina Guidance and Counseling standard, Erin’s Law now mandates that all schools provide age appropriate instruction in sexual abuse awareness and prevention beginning with the 2015-2016 school year. The purpose of the required instruction is to empower children to trust their feelings, recognize and report child sexual abuse, and advocate for their needs.
To meet the requirements of Erin’s Law, our school counselor(s) have facilitated lessons during April to educate students on safe touches and unsafe touches; safe secrets and unsafe secrets; and how to “get away and tell a trusted adult right away.” If you would like more information about Erin’s Law please visit http://erinslaw.org/.
Following Erin’s Law Lessons, your child’s school counselors will be delivering lessons on courage, test preparation, and grade-level transitions. We have loved being a part of your child’s education this school year!

Did you know this 'spring' fact? Reading 'grows' little minds! So excited to see students bringing library books back each library week so they can get new books in their hands and 'grow'! And another fact
--We have about one and a half more months of checkout left in this school year!
The library continues to collect the following items: 24 piece and 100 piece puzzles, starburst candy, greeting cards and used/new books that are collecting dust in your home. Great time for spring cleaning!
Thanks for all your continued support.
A huge thank you to Michelle Hohl from the library and all the teachers at SFES for her hard work for organizing such a successful book fair! Thanks to other helping volunteers and thanks to all the shoppers!
Keep on READING!
Technology:
We are trying to complete some activities before Spring Break to come back to the final push before Summer! Fifth grade is wrapping up our movies. We will share them after Spring Break. Fourth Grade is reviewing what they learned about researching on the Internet. Third Grade is using Google Drawing to complete a monster exchange with Tega Cay Elementary. Ask you student about this project. Second Grade is wrapping up what they have learned this year about Digital Citizenship including password knowledge, showing respect online, and general safety rules. First Grade is using their login skills and Google Drive to create a Book Review document. They will be using the document to read from a teleprompter and create a movie to share. Kindergarten has been working on basic keyboarding skills and how to log into Typing Agent. They will be creating a very short word processing document to use their keyboarding skills and navigating the computer for different programs.
PE:
This month we are focusing on remaining positive during our games and activities. We are stressing the importance of thinking about others and not just yourself. The games we are playing include teamwork and the ability to work together to complete a task. For example, our hula hut game provide the students an opportunity to problem solve and work out their differences in a positive manner.

School Supplies for 2019-2020
The PTA is proud to announce a new program we are starting for school supplies for the following school year (2019/2020). We have partnered with 1st Day School Supplies to provide our families a no hassle and stress free way to purchase all of the school supplies their little one will need for the next school year. This will also includes items off of teachers wish lists as well as back packs, lunch boxes, and water bottles if they want. The supplies will be delivered to the school and the PTA will place them in each child's classroom before Meet the Teacher next August. Our families won't have to lug in countless Target or Walmart bags filled to the brim with school supplies and if they purchase a back pack, lunch box, or water bottle through this program they can take it home with them at Meet the Teacher. This program is being offered as a convenience for our families to save them the time of having to hunt through the mess of school supply shopping and having to go to 3 different stores just to find that last item on the list. All school supplies will be name brand, such as, Ticonderoga, Mead, and Crayola. The accessories offered are from the following brands: Jansport, Vera Bradley, and Under Armour.
To get started, go to the link below and enter in our schools zip code (29715). It will pull up all schools in that zip code that have signed up for this service. You will select our school and then just select the school supply kit and any additional kits/accessories you want. You can add on the teachers wish list (usually includes kleenex, clorox wipes, hand sanitizer, etc...) and backpacks, lunch boxes, and water bottles. There is also an option to donate a kit back to the school. We hope this program is able to save our Springfield families some time and stress this upcoming summer by checking this "to do" item off of their list.
