Montessori and equity: the lense of uniquness and unity
Equity has roots in Montessori
What does Equity look like in a Montessori Classroom?
Pedro Noguera, executive director of the Metropolitan Center for Urban Education, speaks to equity through excellence. In this short video, he speaks to 3 things that are needed in a classroom that supports equity. These same 3 points are key principals in Montessori.
1. The positive Learning environment encourages creativity and interest
2. Get to know each child, each child is seen as a unique individual
3. Focus on connection, building a connection between the Montessori materials and the child.

What can I do to support equity? Be courageous
Families reading this newsletter vary greatly. Some are families who have been with Emerson for many years, some are just joining us this August. Some of our families live in the neighborhood and some have chosen to come to Emerson. Each of us can do our part in creating our school to be the best place for our kids. We all have a part!
The best thing to do today is to be courageous. Being courageous is digging deep inside to do something new or different. Montessori classrooms encourage children to be courageous all the time but we adults need to be courageous as well!
I encourage you to be courageous today! Speak out, speak up, ask hard questions, seek to understand another's point of view, listen, be open to changing your views, think better, do better. Our kids are watching us, how can we model being courageous.
