Friends of JISD Libraries Donation

Dr. Ball donated $300 to the Friends of JISD Libraries! She received a donation from the Education Research & Development Institute for "sharing her expertise and knowledge with industry experts who are developing products and services to support districts, schools, and students." We appreciate Dr. Ball thinking of our group, especially since most of our efforts have been put on hold during the pandemic.

We are selling FJL masks beginning this month, so be on the lookout!

Upcoming TexQuest Training for Teachers, Curriculum Coaches, and Admin

It's never too early for students to explore using vetted digital materials - and this year has shown us how important digital content is for all curriculum. From your computer or laptop, explore TEKS-aligned articles videos, images, and eBooks from Britannica, ProQuest, and Gale with features like text to speech, on-the-spot translations, Lexile searches, and G-Suite functionality. Trainers from each provider will provide "how-to" instructions for their resources and show where to find educator support.

Participants will be sent an email with the agenda and Zoom link prior to the session.

Register @ Connect 20 using the links below.

Your JISD Libraries in Action

December Mask Challenge @ VMHS

For the December "Take & Make" Challenge, teachers and students were provided a white, cloth mask. They decorated it with a Christmas theme. The top three student winners and the top teacher winner received a gift card from Chick-Fil-A, provided by the Rolling Oaks owner-operator Josh Cunningham. We appreciate his continued support of VMHS!

Guest Readers @ Franz Elementary

Ms. Colwell from Kitty Hawk Middle School had the opportunity to Zoom into Mr. Combs's 1st-grade class at Franz Elementary as a guest reader! She read Santa is Coming to Texas by Steve Smallman. This book gives a cute twist to Santa visiting Texas, naming Texas icons as well as notable cities and towns. The students really enjoyed it. Thank you to Mr. Combs and Mrs. George for allowing Ms. Colwell to pop in and read!

Mrs. Thompson from VMHS read Fly Guy's Ninja Christmas to a 2nd-grade class and provided a fun Ninja Choice Board for the students to use during their Winter Break!

Reading is Fundamental @ Hopkins

The Reading is Fundamental organization donated over 2,500 books to Hopkins Hawks through their Books For Ownership Grant. Students were thrilled to choose 3 free books to add to their home libraries. Face to face students were able to pick out their books in the library on December 9th and 10th, while virtual students picked up their books after school at a Book Bundle Drive-Thru Giveaway on December 15.

December Takerspace Challenge @ JHS

Our JHS Library December TakerSpace Challenge winner was JHS AP Ms. Kayone Carter. The gift of wisdom and her art (which was a gift to her son) used a damaged library book they had already paid for repurposed in an amazing way. She carefully cut out images from her son's favorite manga series Naruto to create a beautiful collage piece for him. She wrote: "Though we may be broken and torn, that process can renew and give strength. Even in pieces, we can come together as one to form something bigger." Congratulations, Ms. Carter, for being our December Maker of the Month.

Book Bundles @ Escondido

For families wanting to shut off the screens a bit this winter break, students at Escondido were able to sign up for special book bundles. Each bundle contained 6 books of various genres that families could share and enjoy together.

Holiday Stacks @ WHS & VMHS

Ms. Tschirhart and Mrs. Thompson from WHS and VMHS, respectively, offered holiday stacks to students and teachers to take home for holiday reading. The stacks included books that the teachers and students requested as well as genres that they requested suggestions for new reading. We were thrilled that so many took advantage of this offer, and we look forward to doing it again at Spring Break!
