Overview of the Dewey Decimal System
The Dewey Decimal System was created in 1873 by Melvil Dewey. It was published three years later in 1876. Libraries in 135 countries use the Dewey Decimal System, making it the most used classification system. It is essentially an organization tool used to group nonfiction books into categories based on their subject.
Fun Activity for the Dewey Decimal System
Students can do a Dewey Decimal Scavenger Hunt. Students can be given either the name or the Dewey Decimal number and find the books based on what they know about the categories and the call numbers.
Importance of knowing and utilizing the Dewey Decimal System
It is important to know the Dewey Decimal system in order to be able to find books in specific categories. By utilizing this system, people will be more efficient in finding books in specific categories to read or use for research.
