Don't Be Late - Win Something Great!

Do you want to be entered to win great prizes? It’s easy, just come to school on time each day! This raffle is to encourage students to be on time for school. Students who arrive at school each day by 8:00 a.m. will have their name entered into the raffle. We will choose five names, and those students will be called down to the office to choose a prize! All prizes have been donated by various businesses/organizations in Oak Park as well as from our Holmes School PTO.

The first drawing will take place on Monday, October 1st.

Welcome to The Leader in Me

Each new school year brings opportunities for academic growth and growth in all areas of development. Although children must be knowledgeable when they move on to middle school, they must also be healthy, engaged, responsible, and caring people.

The Leader in Me provides our school with the vision and language to lead the school in a way that addresses all areas of development. As each child discovers and develops their unique gifts and talents, they are given opportunities to lead. As leaders, they become active, engaged partners in their own education and their self-confidence, responsibility, and initiative grows. The children quickly understand the benefits of different gifts and talents; they learn to listen to new ideas, work together to achieve results, and motivate one another to be the best.

We are excited to share these new opportunities. Together, we will watch each and every child grow throughout the year.

Food Service

There are a couple of changes to the district’s food service program that were implemented at the start of the school year. The first change is that the menus will now include information about the common allergens that can be found in the food that is being served. The second change is that we are switching to a three-week cycle menu that will be used for the duration of the 2018-19 school year. Please visit http://www.op97.org/business-office/food-service to learn more about these changes and to access the breakfast and lunch menus for Holmes School.

School Fees

The district is currently accepting fee payments for the 2018-19 school year. Full payment is due by Sept. 30, 2018. You can access the fee information for the 2018-19 school year by visiting http://bit.ly/2MmjOht.

Celebrate Holmes Staff

Families, have you noticed a Holmes teacher or staff member who deserves a compliment or a thank you? Has this person made a difference for your child? Please share the reason in a brief email to me (czelaya@op97.org) so that we may recognize and thank them!

Community Hawk Nest

1. Did you say Carnival? The annual Holmes PTO Fall Carnival is one of our most popular events - and it's FREE for the school community. It takes many helping hands to make this fun event a success, so please consider volunteering to help out during this year's event on Sept 29th! Volunteering for the carnival is also a fun way to get involved at the school and meet other community members. Sign up to volunteer or to bring a cakewalk donation by clicking here. Questions? Feel free to contact the PTO Community Engagement Chairs and Carnival Organizers: Afshan Syed Norris at afshan.syed@gmail.com and Nicole Sumida at sumida.nicole@gmail.com.
2. Register NOW for EDGE!!! EDGE Registration started Aug 29 and ENDS September 4 at 5 PM! Managed by PTO Volunteers, EDGE is an after-school program that offers a variety of classes for Holmes children including science, technology, art, sports and music. To review the Fall, 2018 classes and for more information, look at the revised EDGE brochure attachment below. To register for classes, sign-up at http://owh.classtrackonline.com. 3. Al Fresco Friday - September 7 and 21 from 3:15 PM - 4:15 PM. Join us on the playground after school for popsicles, cool water, friends old and new and dance music! This outdoor social event helps us make parent and child connections outside of school, the school day, and hurried drop offs. Come make a friend, get to know your Holmes community, and enjoy the nice weather! All are welcome - parents, students, siblings. FYI-Al Fresco is cancelled if it’s raining.
4. It’s time to DINE OUT! Take a break from cooking and come DINE OUT with your fellow Holmes Families and support the PTO!! Coming up on Monday, September 17, join us at Lou Malnati's from 11am-11pm. Dine in or carry out and they'll donate 20% of your check back to Holmes. Flyers will go home in backpacks. Digital version is available on the Holmes PTO website and the attachment below.
5. Do you want your student to participate in the instrumental music program but think the cost of renting an instrument makes that impossible? Learn more about PING! Come to an instrumental music signup event. Visit us at the PING! Table on Tues. Sept 4 AND Wed. Sept. 5 from 5 - 8 PM at Julian Middle School, commons area, 416 S. Ridgeland, Oak Park. We can tell you about our program and discuss if we can help your student. We loan band and orchestra instruments to families in need, so their students can participate in band or orchestra at school. Visit https://sites.google.com/site/pingoprf/ for more information.
6. America To Me! Starz began airing the documentary America to Me, filmed at Oak Park River Forest (OPRF) High School three years ago, on August 26. The 10 part series about race and equity will be screened at the OPRF high school, followed by discussion. Visit the OPRF High School website here for more information. Holmes will also have a follow-up event to this series. Watch for more information.
