A Review of Big Pumpkin Day
As we all know Big Pumpkin Day is a big deal in our community. Community members work hard to put this day together and their hard work definitely pays off. Even though Big Pumpkin Day is not celebrated at the high school, the high school is barren on that day because many juniors and seniors are down at the elementary school.
This was my first year volunteering to help with Big Pumpkin Day. I was a little nervous because I didn’t know what to expect. I celebrated Big Pumpkin Day when I was in elementary school (and I only have a vague memory of it) but the experience was sure to be different as a high schooler.
I actually enjoyed Big pumpkin Day more as a high schooler. It was heartwarming to see all of the little kids so excited. They would get so excited over the simplest things such as winning bingo or having their craft project turn out just the way they wanted it to. Their excited and positive energy was contagious and uplifting. It made me more outgoing and positive than I usually am (I’m usually a calm and reserved person) which lasted with me all day. I was pleasantly surprised to see them so excited to see me (as well as the other high schoolers who participated) since at their age I think I was scared of “the big kids”.
Even though I didn’t attend most of my classes at school that day, I learned a lot. I learned that the next generation has great potential. Due to a stereotype that I’ve heard about the next generation, I thought that the world was doomed if it was put in their hands, but I was wrong. I know that they will do amazing things because I could tell from just one day that they are very intelligent, inclusive, and unconventional. They were much nicer to each other and to their teachers than my generation was when we were in elementary school. In addition, this experience helped me grow as an individual. I am usually pretty shy and reserved but I realized that it is much easier to open up than it is to hide. I had a lot of fun talking to the kids and was surprised at how friendly everyone is. With this experience, I learned that I take the people in my life for granted and that people are naturally nice.
Earlier last week, I was actually considering not going to Big Pumpkin Day because a full day of study halls was just what I needed to get all of my work done. I am so glad that I chose to go to Big Pumpkin Day instead because I had so much fun and learned a lot from it. If you don’t know if you should go to Big Pumpkin Day next year, you should! You won’t regret it!

Relay for Life
By Erin Noger
When the day of the event came, there were only 98 people registered. However, there were about “115 that came” to the event. Initially, there was a goal of $5,500 but after the event, Mrs.Lock said that “we tripled the goal given to us” raising a total of $15,026. She was proud that we had surpassed our goal and that she was able to introduce such an amazing event to the community. When asked if there will be a Relay For Life next year and Mrs.Lock quickly stated “Yes” and plans to have it the first week in October 2019.

The Origins of Halloween: Fun Facts
Halloween’s origins date back to a Celtic festival known as Samhain
The Celts lived in what is now Ireland over 2000 years ago
November 1st was the Celtic new year, which marked the first day of winter
They celebrated Samhain because they believed that October 31st was the day the ghosts of the dead returned to Earth
The ghosts of the dead would cause trouble, destroy crops, etc. it was also believed that these spirits made it easier for the priests to make predictions about the future
These predictions were very important for the Celts for they provided comfort during the winter
In commemoration they would build sacred bonfires were people would sacrifice animals and crops to deities
Often during these celebrations, people would dress up in costumes and attempted to predict each other’s futures
Eventually, we ended up with the candy and costumes we know today
