Reading Intervention Update
October 2023
Ms. Hall's Corner
Happy Fall!
I am excited to be writing this update as we have finally begun our reading groups for trimester one. Sea Dragon's began attending reading groups on September 18th. If your student is working with either myself, Ms. Rebecca or Ms. Jones a welcome letter was sent home with your student to let you know. So far all kiddos have shown up ready to learn and excited to be present to practice their reading skills. We discussed with all of our groups the value of this time we get together and made sure they understand the importance of trying our best, staying focused and tracking our progress. Please check out some pictures and sample assignments from our groups so far. Also, please check out some valuable reading resources for home.
This school year I will continue to send monthly updates through Mr. Chabola's Dragon Diary letting you know about all the great things the students are doing during reading intervention time.
If you ever have any questions please feel free to email me whether your student is in intervention or not!
Lower School TK-Gr2
- TK and Kindergarten students spend trimester one learning routines and developing social skills and academic skills within their classrooms. As the year continues I will become part of their rotation learning time.
- Grade one combines the entire grade level and creates grouping based on achievement of grade level standards. These groupings allow students teachers to provide the appropriate differentiated instruction to be sure all kiddos are getting what they need in reading. I am a part of this rotation and provide reading intervention to student's who need it.
- Grade 2 students work with me in a small group inside my office four days a week for 30 minutes. This group happens during each classrooms common WIN (what I need) time where all students are receiving differentiated instruction.
Grade 1
Trick words Part 1: Students use a multi-sensory approach to learning words with irregular patterns. Students tap out sounds in words and use colors to coordinate sounds that follow the rules and the parts that try and "trick" us. Students then copy letters onto paper using bumpy paper and use their finger to feel the word in order to commit it to memory.
Grade 1
Second Grade
Students are using their fluency packets to practice reading words quickly and accurately.
Upper School Gr3-Gr5
Reading groups for trimester one are in full swing.
In the upper grades 3-5 students work with me in a small group inside my office four days a week for 30 minutes. This group happens during each classrooms common WIN (what I need) time where all students are receiving differentiated instruction. During trimester one students are focusing on decoding and encoding of multisyllabic words, fluency and making meaning by building their comprehension skills.
Third Grade
During a lesson this week students were practicing their encoding skills. Students learned how to break words down into syllable types and then correctly spell the /ic/ sound with either -ic or -ick.
