Dear KAS Families,

We are so glad for students to be back in classrooms, and to soon resume our after school activities. Thank you to the entire KAS community for making Digital Days a success. Thank you again for your part in supporting our enhanced health and safety procedures. While nobody expected the challenges that we continue to face from the COVID-19, the entire KAS community should be proud of how students, parents, faculty, staff, PTA, and Board of Directors have come together. By working together, students have stayed safe, learning has continued, and we have strengthened as a school community.

Our Response Team continues meeting daily to monitor the situation and make any necessary adjustments to our program. Even though we have had a safe and successful return to classrooms, we feel it is very important to stay ever more vigilant to do everything we can to keep students safe. More information can be found at www.kas.tw/health-update/

Congratulations to all G10 students who participated in the Personal Project exhibition. The Personal Project is an important part of the IB Middle Years Program. In this project, students choose a topic of importance and interest to them, and work through 4 areas: planning, learning, taking action, and reflection. Yet again, KAS students took their learning to the next level and showed their critical thinking and their creative ideas. Nicely done, G10!

Kind regards,

MS News

Dear KAS MS Families:

The KAS MS teachers have asked me to say “thank you” again for all of the support for digital learning during the campus closure. Now that students have returned, it is important for our students to also return to routines and practices that will allow them to be successful in school and in life.

MS student surveys this year have revealed that our students’ greatest stress is “homework.” At the same time, many parents have expressed concerns about “screen time” at home. As a result we have developed this “KAS MS Students and Family Basic Wellness Plan.”

Also, I would like to invite all eighth grade parents to school for our High School Information meeting on Wednesday, February 26 at 3:30pm in the Media Center, with our high school counselor, Ms. Jill Newman. Parents will learn all about high school course selection for next year, as well as college and graduation requirements. See you there.

As always, it is a pleasure to serve this wonderful community of students, staff, and parents. Please feel free to contact me any time. Sincerely,

IB BITS

The IB Programs are full of jargon. The terminology used is familiar to IB students and teachers worldwide, but can be confusing to IB parents. Here are two terms commonly used by IB schools in the Diploma Program:

Internal Assessments. Often called “IAs”, these are important assessments which count toward IB students’ scores. Science labs, literary essays, and oral presentations are examples of these assessments. They are called “internal” because the assessments are scored by the teacher using a set of IB criteria. IB monitors these scores by randomly selecting 6 - 10 students to upload their work (both the work and the scores) and send to IB. IB scores the random samples, and if the teacher’s scores are correct, then all the students receive the scores given to them by the teacher. If IB finds the scores to be too high, or too low, then IB will “moderate” the scores, changing all the scores on that particular assessment. This requires every IB teacher to be methodical and thoughtful when it comes to scoring IB assessments. It also maintains a standard level of expectations in IB schools around the world.

Mock Exams. Most IB Diploma schools administer mock exams. Teachers will often use IB exams from past years, or create an IB-like exam. The exams are administered very much like the actual IB exams, allowing 12th grade IB students to practice the rigor of long and many exams, and to find gaps in their knowledge. KAS mock exams will occur March 9 - 12; the students will then have until April 29th to review and to study for the actual IB exams.

Meet Marjon Saulon

Marjon graduated from KAS and enrolled in San Diego State University in the U.S. where he majored in Comparative International Studies with a minor in Chinese.

He says by the time he started college, he already knew how to write very well in an academic setting for quality essays and research papers, thanks to the preparation he received as a graduate of the IB Diploma program.

“KAS taught me how to think critically and to be reflective. This allowed me to handle college classes better because I was not simply memorizing and regurgitating information. I learned of the importance of thinking independently and asking enough questions to truly understand subjects at hand,” shares Marjon.

High school is a time of great discovery, effort and fun, but Marjon gives the advice that it’s also important to take risks, make great friends, and “push yourself to discover what you are passionate about.”

He currently works as a Communications Specialist for a non-profit in San Diego and intends to apply for graduate school for a Masters in International Relations next fall in order to work in policy and global affairs.

ACT Changes

Students can now combine ACT scores or “super score” their best test scores from the exam’s 4 parts: English, Math, Reading & Science. Students will also be able to retake individual subject tests instead of sitting for the entire 4 part exam.

Early Returns for the class of 2024

Parents and students always like to see statistics and admit rates of the various colleges, especially the most competitive ones so….here are a few.

The question always is “what type of students get into these colleges?” Well, here is a sample of a few who Johns Hopkins admitted:

“The class includes a humanist scholar who analyses the significance of Shakespeare to Chinese Culture; an inventor of an inexpensive portable camera that can photograph the back of the human eye; a children's’ book illustrator; a researcher focused on LGBTQ issues on oncological therapies and lastly, an international video games champion.”

As you can see, the diversity of students is very important to universities in the makeup of incoming freshmen. What will YOU bring to the table?.
