Hollis Grade School Principal’s Report
May 20, 2019
Students in grades 3-8 attended the annual Clean Water Celebration on Monday, April 29. We had a lot of student leadership throughout this event -- students ran the Sun Foundation Bubble Booth with the help of Mrs. Martin, our third graders provided education on composting, and several seventh and eighth grade students presented during the keynote sessions about the zero waste lunch hour.
Our third grade class won the Sun Foundation’s Call to Action challenge for their dedication to the composting program. For their efforts, they were awarded with Kleen Kanteen reusable water bottles.
On Wednesday, May 2, Mrs. Martin took 6 junior high students to the NASA Centennial Challenge at Caterpillar’s Learning and Demonstration Center in Edwards, IL. Students were able to view the third phase of the NASA challenge where team members printed 3-D materials that could assist with developing life on Mars.
Our annual Hollis School Spelling Bee was held on Friday, May 3. Twelve students from grades 5-8 participated. The top speller was fifth grader Beau Breedlove. Our runner-up was eighth grader Isabella Manley.
Hollis completed the state mandated Erin’s Law trainings on Friday, May 3. Presenters from the Center for Prevention of Abuse visited our classrooms and delivered grade specific programming from their “Keeping My Body” safe series. Education was provided to all students, grades K-8.
Caspian Adams and Riley Galletti were recognized at the Illinois Principals Association Student Recognition Breakfast on Monday, May 6. They also served as this year’s Graduation Marshals.
Our Judith Sapp Scholars are Isabella Manley, Connor Scholl, and Ryan Young. They were honored at the Kiwanis Banquet on Wednesday, May 6.
Hollis had another successful track season! On May 10-11, several students participated in the state track meet and even broke some records! Congratulations to Ethan Kizer who won state in the high jump (5’9’’) and broke the school’s record in long jump (18-6). Congrats to Reece Dusek who broke the school record in the mile (5:07). Congratulations to Bella Manley who placed 13th for hurdles, and congratulations to the girls 4x200 relay team of Mia Dusek, Carlee Mohn, Andi Potts, Taylor Tiska, and Brynn Buskirk.
On Wednesday, May 15, Hollis students attended Arts in the Park at the Courthouse. Grades K-5 performed selections from their music program, our choir sang, and the 6-8 band performed pieces from the spring concert.
The 5th-8th grade No Detention Party was held on Thursday, May 16. Fifty-five students were treated with a morning of skating at Planet X. Qualifying students earned fewer than 50 demerits this year and were detention-free and ISI-free.
Student Council hosted the fifth annual Charity Kickball Tournament on Friday, May 17. A total of $200 was raised which will be split between PAWS and TAPS.
May has been a busy month for classroom field trips! Students in kindergarten and first grade attended Riverplex; second grade visited the Children’s Discovery Museum in Bloomington; third grade attended the Riverfront Museum; and on Thursday, fourth grade visited Wildlife Prairie Park while seventh and eighth graders visited Six Flags St. Louis.
