A Note From Mr. Walker, Principal
It’s hard to believe that this is the last newsletter of the school year. It seems like yesterday that we celebrated Labor Day and were preparing for the first day of school. The 2018-2019 school year has been awesome and I thank you for working with us to support your child. Below are a some highlights and celebrations:
- Our numbers of students reading on grade level and above grade level has increased.
- Our number of behavior referrals have decreased. ( Yeah!!!- shout out to you and our staff)
- Our new Media Center looks awesome. We have more students reading and selecting books more than ever before.
- More students are engaged in the Arts. Our Winter and Spring Concerts have been well attended and our students are growing in their performance. Additionally we have more students creating amazing projects in Art/Humanities and Art Classes.
- Our first ever Talent Show was awesome. We raised over $2,000 for Chromebooks through our Penny Wars and Talent Show.
As we prepare for summer. I have attached a wonderful article about how to keep your child engaged over the summer. Please see the link below:

Classroom News!
Pre-Kindergarten
We have made it to June! A huge thank you to all the families that were able to join us for conferences. We enjoy being able to share how much your child has grown and we are so proud of the progress they have made in Pre-K this year! As we wrap up the end of the year, we will be reviewing the letters/letter sounds, sight words, and focusing on handwriting. In math, we will focus on subtraction within 5, while reviewing addition. In social studies and science, we will learn about how we travel from place to place and where our food comes from. We hope that you can join us on June 12th for our end of the year celebration! Please do not forget to return the pre-registration form and send all pictures for the slide show via email or Class Dojo. Thank you for your continued support throughout the entire school year and have a great summer!
Kindergarten
Kindergarten students have learned so much this school year! We are very proud of everyone's accomplishments. Please continue to review and practice reading and math skills over the summer in preparation for first grade. Report cards will be sent in the mail in June after the last week of school. In place of a graduation ceremony, we will have a Kindergarten picnic to celebrate the end of the school year with families. Please return the picnic slip if you or other relatives will be attending. As these last weeks are approaching, please make sure your child comes to school each day. We will be sending a lot of materials home and we will be doing a lot of fun activities in June. Have a safe and wonderful summer!!!
First Grade
Dear Parents, In this theme, your child will be exploring how our daily lives experience and respond to change. Below are some suggestions on how to support this at home:
Science/ Social Studies: Students are learning about overcoming challenges through: Making “choice” decisions regarding wants, needs, goods, and services • Understanding how “invention” may solve challenges Activities to do at home: • Use “economic” vocabulary at home: scarcity, surplus, wants, needs, goods and services.
Shared Reading; First graders will engage in the enhanced shared reading curriculum starting in the fourth quarter. Our classroom received new big books to be read as a classroom community to practice important reading skills with the teacher’s assistance. Please ask your child about the new books we have in our classroom and what we are learning during shared reading!
Math: Your child will learn that the short hand shows the hour and is called the hour hand and the long hand shows the minutes and is called the minute hand. It is important for your child to see the hour hand half way between two hours is half passed the hour, and therefore is 30 minutes.
Second Grade
It is hard to believe it is already June! This year has flown by and the students are turning into 3rd graders. We will be continuing to test students on their reading levels. The grade level expectation for the end of the year is level M. Please make sure your child is reading at home every night for at least 20 minutes. In math we will be working on arrays and partitioning rectangles into equal rows and columns. Be sure to ask your child where he/she may be able to see arrays in the real world! We are continuing to work on creating and analyzing a variety of poems in writing. For science and social studies, we will be focusing on how to be a change maker and the impact each of us have on the world. Thank you for your continued support as we finish out the school year!
Third Grade
In math for the month of June we will be working though the last unit! This unit focuses on multiplication strategies using measurement. Please continue to practice multiplication facts nightly! These are very important especially moving into 4th grade where multiplication gets complex and numbers get larger.
In the month of June, students will be reading a variety of readers’ theaters and focusing on applying the structural elements of dramas. Every reader will be working on reading his/her part fluently, with expression, and at a reasonable rate. To celebrate our learning, we will be presenting our readers’ theaters for the Second Grade classes. Ask your child to tell you about the drama they are reading! Once school is over and summer break begins, please encourage your child to read every day for at least 20 minutes. Set a screen-free time and silently read for 20 minutes as a family and share what you’ve read. Remember to take advantage of your public library and the free programs they have to offer this summer as well! It's great place to get out of the heat and keep your brain muscle strong! Happy reading!
Social Studies: Students apply the 21st Century skills they have acquired throughout the year (Communication, Collaboration, Critical Thinking and Creativity) to investigate and take action on an environmental issue.
Writing: Students will continue working on adapting well-known fairy tales and even create their very own!
Fourth Grade
Reading- This month, students will be reading a variety of readers’ theaters and focusing on applying the structural elements of dramas. Every reader will be working on reading his/her part fluently, with expression, and at a reasonable rate. To celebrate our learning, will be presenting our readers’ theaters for the Kindergarten classes. Over the Summer, please encourage your child to continue reading every day for at least 20 minutes. The more they read, they better they'll get!
Math- Students will be reviewing all skills and concepts learned this year. We will practice place value, addition and subtraction with regrouping, multiplication of large numbers, division with large numbers, and fractions. Please practice all of the above with your child at home. The more practice with each skill, the more comfortable they will feel! Over the Summer, please work with your child on their multiplication facts 0-12. Fifth grade math gets harder, but if those facts are memorized, it is one less step to complete next year in Math!
Fifth Grade
Our fifth graders' time at BPES is drawing to a close. The fifth grade teachers (with Mr. Walker's approval) have planned Wonderful Wednesdays for the students. On June 5th, we will have extended recess utilizing the entire parking lot for kickball and basketball and the playground for the students who wish to use the equipment or play soccer on the grass. On June 12th, we will have Picnic Day during lunch.
Promotion invitations went home last week. Fifth grade promotion is on June 14th at the Chesapeake Arts Center on Hammonds Lane at 9:00 a.m. Students should arrive at the center by 8:30 a.m. to prepare for the procession. Families should bring their students to the Chesapeake Arts Center, not to Brooklyn Park Elementary. We will not have bus transportation from school to the promotion ceremony.
Media
Hello families! First of all, I want to extend a big thank you to everyone who shopped at our Spring Book Fair. We were able to raise more than $2,000 Scholastic Dollars, which will be used to purchase new books and learning materials for the library.
I also wanted to make families aware that the final day for student book checkout is Monday, June 3rd. After this, I'll be spending the rest of the year tracking down lost and overdue books. Please help your child find any library books they may still have checked out after June 3rd. I don't charge monetary fines, but instead have students "read off" their fines-- if your child comes home with an orange "Read It Off" paper, please help them keep track of their reading minutes and return the paper to me. Thank you! - Ms. Kolodziej
Field Day!
Field Day will be held on Friday, June 7, rain or shine. Students in grades K-5 will participate in 18 rotations from 9 a.m.-11:15 a.m. Rotations will be inside, on the blacktop, and up on the grass field. Please remind your child/children to wear their team color, sneakers, sunblock, and bring a water bottle with their name on it. Volunteers should pre-register by sending in their full name and date of birth. Volunteers should plan to arrive at school by 8:45 on Field Day to get the directions for their activity. Thank you in advance for all of your help making Field Day an amazing experience for all of our students! Mrs. Burke
Instrumental Music
If your child is borrowing an instrument or music book from Brooklyn Park Elementary, please return those to Mrs. Israel promptly. Also, if you have any instruments or music you’d like to donate, Mrs. Israel would appreciate it! Have a wonderful summer, thank you for supporting the Brooklyn Park Band and Orchestra Programs!

10 Ways to Avoid Summer Slide!
10 Ways to Avoid Summer Slide

Did you know that children can lose up to three months of academic progress over
the summer? Over 100 years of research continually shows this trend.
Here are ten things you can do to help your child avoid the summer slide.
- Read EVERY day! Read non-fiction, fiction, ebooks, poetry, newspapers and read out loud! For most children, twenty minutes is an appropriate amount of time to read for a child who is an independent reader. Most libraries have a wonderful summer reading program with incentives and rewards for books read over the summer.
- Cook with your children. This is one of the best ways to integrate math, reading and following directions. Let your child design the menu too! Help your child put together their favorite recipes in a cookbook.
- Plant a garden. Your child will gain responsibility and pride as they watch their plants grow and thrive.
- Take a field trip to a museum, zoo or local park with walking trails. Keep a journal about your travels.
- Learn a new word each week! Hang it on the fridge and see who can use it the most times throughout the week.
- Enroll in a quality summer program that will provide your child with opportunities to build their critical thinking skills.
- Play quick games with flashcards like Math War or Concentration to keep math skills sharp.
- Listen to Audio Books during your road trip.
- Take pictures and make a summer scrapbook.
- Did I mention READ?! If your child does nothing else this summer, make sure he/she is reading!
Just like with playing a sport, Reading and Math are skills that must be practiced. It is important to keep your child’s mind engaged over the summer so they will not fall victim to the summer slide!
