The Walden Weekly

School News You Can Use - Oct. 21, 2022

Dear Walden Families,

We had a great week at Walden School! Students learned about health and safety with Officer Lauren Maldonado at our Red Ribbon Week assembly. She spoke about different ways that we can take care of our bodies with healthy food and exercise. She also spoke about being cautious with taking only medicine that is given to us by our doctor or parent/guardian, not eating anything that is assumed to be candy since sometimes medicine can look like candy, and to let an adult know if you find medicine in your house. It was an informative and age-appropriate assembly for our students. Thank you, Officer Maldonado!

Please see the video below of our raffle basket winners from Movie Night! This was a remarkably successful event and thank you to our PTO for their effort in making this night so much fun!

Enjoy your weekend!

Parent Teacher Conferences

Mark your calendars - We will hold our annual parent-teacher conferences on Monday, November 21 in the evening and all day on Tuesday, November 22. All D109 schools will hold in-person parent-teachers conferences this year with an option to Zoom for parents/guardians who are not available for an in-person conference.

We will have parents sign up for a conference using Sign-Up Genius. I will share links for all teacher sign-up forms on Tuesday, November 1, at 5:00 pm.

It is best practice to hold one parent conference per child, to ensure that both parents receive the same information regarding their child’s strengths and needs. Therefore, I ask that parents sign up for one joint conference per student. If this is a concern, please reach out to me directly. We look forward to seeing all of our parents during conferences.

Conferences are a discussion between parents and teachers. At this time elementary conferences do not include students and therefore we ask that children not attend the parent-teacher conference. We look forward to connecting soon!

Upcoming Pumpkin Contest

We are excited about our annual pumpkin decorating contest next week from Wednesday - Friday. Our Walden Staff will show off their amazing decorated pumpkins and students can bring coins into school to vote on their favorite ones! All proceeds will benefit the Highland Park Community Foundation.

Walden PAWS (2nd Posting)

For the first time since 2019, we came together last Friday for a whole school assembly! It was absolutely wonderful being together again as a building! We met together to discuss a new incentive program at Walden. When students are caught following our Walden Way, they can earn a little ticket that we are calling "P.A.W.S". This stands for Positive Actions at Walden School. Our Walden Way teaches students how to be respectful, responsible, and safe in different common areas. Once students earn a PAW, they take their ticket to the office to turn in to a large jar. Once the jar reaches its goal line, we will have a whole school reward! Students will receive a sticker to wear proudly on the days that they earn a PAW. If you see your child come home with one of these stickers, feel free to praise their efforts since they were caught following our Walden expectations. We are excited about this new initiative at Walden!

K-2 SEL Survey (2nd Posting)

In grades 3-8, students take an online survey to reflect on skills related to social-emotional learning and the school environment. To gather feedback from our youngest students, we have created a very short (8-question) survey to administer to Kindergarten through 2nd graders next week. This survey will collect information about Sense of Belonging and Engagement, and the results will help guide our improvement at the school level. Per policy, if you would like your child to opt out of taking the survey, please contact me no later than October 21.
