Evansdale Newsletter - June Edition

A Letter from the Principal - The Year in Review

Evansdale had another outstanding year! Thank you to our hard-working students, parents, and staff. Our school soared in many areas during the year. I have summarized just a small portion of these accomplishments for you below:

  • The Georgia Department of Education released the 2015-2016 College and Career Ready Performance Index (CCRPI) scores for the DeKalb County School District and its schools. I’m proud to announce that Evansdale scored an 80, which ranks us second in our elementary school cluster. Way to go students, teachers, and parents!

  • We continue to pursue STEM Certification, which will help us access all of the STEM resources and opportunities available to Georgia Schools. STEM schools help students to excel in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.

  • Our School Council conducted an inventory and parent survey regarding the different types of communication tools Evansdale uses to communicate to its families (e.g., courier, text alerts, email blasts, websites, etc.). We learned that we can do a better job of making information available to you. Thanks to a great response to the survey, we will start or continue the following communication efforts:

    • Send out a weekly e-blast to all Evansdale families. This e-blast will include current school information along with information sent to the school from PTA, School Council, and the Evansdale Foundation.

    • Use a texting/calling post service, on a regular basis to notify families of upcoming school events, inclement weather announcements, changes in school schedules, and other matters that need to be conveyed to parents within a 24 hour period.

    • Update and maintain the school website, keeping it current and engaging throughout the year.

    • Continue to use weekly couriers for flyers, notices, forms, and graded school work.

    • The PTA will continue sending PTA e-blasts as needed to promote and reinforce upcoming PTA events.

    • The PTA will continue the monthly newsletter “The Eagle” and its Facebook page. However, it will close Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest accounts.

    • The Foundation will continue updating/maintaining its website and Facebook page.

  • Thanks to its donors and Eagle Trekkers, the Evansdale Foundation was able to:

    • Hire and train our first full-time STEM coordinator to advance the integration of STEM learning approaches, materials and curriculum at Evansdale. Miss Umukoro (Ms. U) also worked to advance the skills and capabilities of our teachers and establish a new STEM lab for the school.
    • Pay incentives to 10 (Wow!) teachers to complete their Gifted or ESOL certifications during the 2015/2016 school year. This gifted certification advances the classroom experience of all the children through new learning/teaching techniques, AND gifted certified teachers earn points and money for the school. Through Foundation incentives over the six years, nearly 2/3 of our Teachers are gifted certified now.
    • Help complete the lower field track and the purchase of new soccer goals to enhance the fitness activities available to all our students by securing grants from the Atlanta Track Club.

  • Evansdale welcomed and taught approximately 589 students during the 2015-2016 school year.

  • The French Immersion program continues to be a popular option for many students. We have already hired a fabulous French teacher for next year as the program will extend into 3rd grade.

While this is just a snapshot of the exciting things happening at Evansdale, please know there are many more to come! I wish you all a fun and safe summer….and don’t forget to READ! See you in August.

Welcome Evansdale's New Assistant Principal to the Nest!

It is with great pleasure to announce that Mr. Robert Clayton has accepted the position of Assistant Principal at Evansdale. He was born and raised in Pensacola, Florida. He is a graduate of University of Florida. He worked in medical sales for 10 years but felt the calling and transferred to the education field in 2007. He began his career at Hawthorne Elementary, teaching 5th grade math & science. While teaching there, he got his Masters at Mercer. He also received Gifted Certification. In 2013, he transferred to Kittredge Magnet where he has been teaching 4th grade science. He has felt the strong desire to move into administration for awhile, so he was very excited when he saw the opportunity to serve as Assistant Principal become available this summer. He is married and has two daughters. He is thrilled to become an eagle and looks forward to getting to know everyone in the Evansdale community. Plans are underway for a meet and greet. Details will be published in next month's newsletter.

Leaving Evansdale?

We hope not...but ... if you know that your student will not be returning to Evansdale next year, please stop by the main office and withdraw him/her by the end of June. This will make the transition to your new school easier and enable our teachers to have more accurate class lists at the beginning of the school year.
