WMS Weekly Bulletin
January 21-26, 2019
Our Texas Education Agency loves acronyms. Let's face it, the world of education loves acronyms. So, if I mentioned SLOs to you, would you know what I was referencing?
The plan is that by the end of the day tomorrow (Tuesday), you'll know exactly what they are and will walk away from CAST with a plan of action because this year, all across the state, educators will be trying out SLOs for the first time en masse.
SLOs, or Student Learning Objectives, are part of the T-TESS Instructional Rubric geared to help develop teacher skills and strategies by way of monitoring student growth. The gist is this: student learning improves because the educator has honed their craft to help fill gaps and guide thinking from a beginning point to an end point.
You'll get some more information in CAST tomorrow, but I wanted to remind everyone of the power of CAST and what Kim & Joey are doing with this time each Tuesday. The model they have created and will roll out over the course of the next few weeks has been field-tested in our classrooms with our kids. They have worked out a plan so you can take small, manageable portions of learning and embed it seamlessly into your teaching.
By following up each CAST meeting with your new learning, you will be inherently doing the process of SLOs (required by the state from all teachers this year) within a supportive structure to add tools to your toolbox, helps our scholars grow, and doing it alongside your colleagues for added conversation and learning!
I'm very excited to see this next cycle kick off in CAST and I appreciate everyone's willingness to travel down this instructional journey at WMS.
Go Warhawks! And, remember, you belong here.

Week in Review
NEW DATES: RTI Instruction Plan
Starting in February, we will run a four-week series of tutorials DURING THE SCHOOL DAY on THURSDAYS to help our scholars who need extra support in the four core content areas. For our other scholars, we will provide extension activities. Details are forthcoming.
Please mark your calendars for the following dates as we will have an alternate schedule on the following THURSDAYS: February 21, February 28, and March 7, and March 21.
Releasing Scholars from Class at Bell
Specifically when releasing seventh graders from sixth period, consider the following expectations for our student-athletes:
- The girls are expected to get changed and in their roll call lines 2 minutes after the tardy bell. This gives them the 5 minutes in between classes and then an additional 2 minutes, so 7 minutes total to get changed.
- Boys start checking roll at 3:04.
In all cases, if you must keep a student after the dismissal bell and they might be tardy, please write them a pass to their next destination.
Parent Communication - Every 2 Weeks
Things to include in these emails are:
- current assignments/projects
- upcoming tests/projects
- major school events
- your name, content area & grade, and WMS (for our parents with kids at multiple campuses)
Please copy Mishler on your next email.
