Car Rider Safety Plan
Parents of car riders~
In order to ensure the safety of all car riders we want to provide a few reminders of the Car Rider Dismissal Safety Plan:
· Please stay in your car to pick up your child/children. Please do not park along N. Chariton and walk across the parking lot to get your child. Doing so causes congestion to the traffic flow.
· Please teach your child to buckle their own seatbelt.
· Have your children load/unload from the passenger side, along the sidewalk.
We realize the car rider line is very long, but when everyone follows the plan in place, we promise that the line will move quickly, efficiently, and most of all SAFELY.
Thank you for your cooperation!

Hawthorn Named a PTA School of Excellence
We just learned that our school has been named a PTA School of Excellence. The honor highlights schools’ strong partnerships with families, including their commitment to building a welcoming environment in which families enrich the educational experience and students’ overall well-being. This recognition is a direct reflection of the hard work of many volunteers who give countless hours of service to Hawthorn. Thank you, PTA, for all you do! The students and staff of Hawthorn are lucky to have your support!
Walk To Water Update
Last spring our school community worked together to raise money to help fund a well for water in Africa. We recently received the following update:
The water harvesting project is almost complete. We have built the bases for the three tanks and also for an earlier existing tank. We have been able to put up two of the tanks but the third one will have to wait until we have harvested because it has to be rolled through a section where maize is currently growing. The third tank will be fed by water gutters from the cow sheds . We should be able to harvest and set it up in the next two months. Once again thanks a million times. for this great support.
Thank you, Hawthorn families for your support of this service learning project! Your generosity is making a difference!

Daily Dismissal Procedures
At Back to School Night, you will have the opportunity to confirm your child's daily dismissal plan with the classroom teacher. Please communicate any changes to this plan, as they arise, throughout the school year to ensure that your child gets home safely each day.
BUS RIDERS: Bus riders are dismissed through the north doors (by the gym) each afternoon. Classroom teachers walk students to the buses and help them find the appropriate bus. During the first few days, this process can take a bit longer than normal as staff members double check that all students are on the correct bus. Then, the bus can get further delayed as the drivers take time to make sure students safely get off at the right stop.
ADVENTURE CLUB: Students who participate in the after-school care program, Adventure Club, are dismissed directly to the cafeteria each day. Adventure Club staff checks in each student and cross-checks with our front office to ensure that all students who are enrolled in Adventure Club are accounted for at dismissal.
While the car rider line can be slow the first few days, once our Kindergarten students learn the routine, it will speed up considerably. Thanks in advance for your patience and understanding that our main focus in on all students getting into cars safely. Parents can help by staying in your vehicle and allowing staff members to assist students into cars, teaching your child how to buckle their own seat belt, and making sure that students are able to load your vehicle on the passenger side. Thank you!!
WALKERS: Walkers will be dismissed through the K/1 Pod doors and can meet their families at the East end of the playground/ bike rack area.

Did You Know?
School Start Times
Based on overwhelming feedback from our Park Hill parents, staff members, students and community members, we decided not to change our start times for the 2019-2020 school year. However, we still have challenges due to the nationwide shortage of bus drivers. In addition, while costs for transportation increased sharply over the last few years, state funding for transportation has not kept up. Because we have some money in our reserves, this gap in funding is not an immediate crisis, but we cannot keep taking money from the reserves indefinitely for this and other costs.
The district has an advisory committee, which will take the findings from our Sleep and Start Times work group and make some recommendations to the district and the Board. We will also ask for more public feedback to inform the Board as it makes its decision. In addition to an in-person public feedback meeting, we will continue to get your feedback using our public engagement web site, Park Hill Listens. To get the latest information and give us your feedback, go to https://www.parkhilllistens.com/school-start-times.

We will use electronic communication frequently, so if you do not have access to a computer at home, please be sure to contact your child’s teacher to let them know, so they can send you information in your child’s backpack.
