Message From Mrs. Taormina
Walking around campus this past week, I enjoyed seeing students of all ages engaged in STEAM challenges, art, projects, and games with their classmates! It's been truly wonderful to see our students back on campus with their teachers and peers.
When: August 18, 2021
Where: Zoom
Parents/Guardians are encouraged to attend their child's class virtually to meet the teacher and learn about the curriculum! Teachers will be sharing specific times and zoom links before Wednesday, so please look for an email shortly.
Parking Lot and Bicycle Safety
We are asking all adults to be cautious when dropping off and picking up children from school. Please have your children use the crosswalks and do not allow them to cross in the middle of any street or the parking lot. Also, please do not park your vehicle in any of the drop-off zones, handicap parking, or block any of the neighbor's driveways. The cars must keep pulling forward in the drop-off zones, so please do not get out of your car when dropping off or picking up your child.
Please be mindful of cyclists! Bicycles have the right to use the whole lane, and little ones who are cycling are permitted to ride on the sidewalk. I also want to remind parents that students cannot be dropped off before 8:00 a.m. Until that time, there is no adult supervision, so please do not leave children unattended before 8:00 a.m. We appreciate your cooperation in helping to keep all of our children safe.
~Mrs. Taormina

Check out the New District Website Launched | August 5, 2021
On August 5th, USD launched a streamlined and updated District website designed to inform the community, staff members and families.
The homepage at www.unionsd.org contains many links for easy access of information including department links, COVID-19 information, messages from the Superintendent, board meetings, and more. Most of the information can be found in similar locations as the previous website, but should you have any difficulty finding something on the new site, please contact unionsd@unionsd.org.
USD COVID Dashboard
During the school year, USD will publish the count of confirmed positive COVID-19 cases on a weekly basis. Data counts will be updated on Tuesdays for the previous week.
To ensure privacy, names or identifying information of positive cases will not be disclosed.
If you have symptoms or feel sick, don’t delay in taking a COVID test. COVID symptoms, such as cough, sore throat, fever, or chills can sometimes be confused as allergies or a seasonal cold.
The county has various testing sites for people with symptoms, find one at: www.sccfreetest.org
Reminder: Masks are required in indoor settings, regardless of vaccination status.
The Swiss Cheese Model graphic below demonstrates how wearing a mask, even when vaccinated, helps to reduce transmission and increase protection:
Travel Guidance When Going on Vacation
Once arriving in the US, all individuals must follow the guidance (testing and quarantine) set forth per the CDC.
The key thing is no child under 12 is vaccinated, so rules are more restrictive. Schools will require a negative test result PRIOR to coming to school.
For more information, please visit the CDC website:
Calendar

Free Meals for All Students in 2021-22
The Food Services staff is excited to share that for the 2021-22 school year, all meals are free and are available to all students. Payment for a school breakfast or lunch is not required when a student picks up a meal in the cafeteria.
If you have any questions about Food Services and breakfast and lunch at school, you can contact the food services department by calling (408) 377-8010 Extension 44203.
Sodexo's So Happy App
Now, more than ever, we want to understand what’s in our meals – the ingredients, and especially the nutritional and allergen information. So Happy provides a level of transparency previously unknown to the industry, with clear product descriptions and graphical representations for every nutritional category.
Rely on So Happy to tell you what's on the menu in your school's cafeteria, and utilize the allergen alert features to highlight recipes of concern. Have a question? Use the Talk to Us portal to quickly and easily contact a member of the food service team.
Don't see your school site on the app? Please reach out your district's Sodexo General Manager to inquire.
