Principal's Message
Hello Stayton Elementary Families,
I hope you are all staying safe and remaining healthy. I want to start out by telling you how much I miss all of our students and seeing their bright faces and adorable smiles. I know the staff here all feel the same. If you were not able to attend the staff parade on Monday, please visit our Facebook page. There is a video and lots of pictures of this special event.
As many of you already know, Governor Brown has closed all schools in Oregon until April 28th. She has called on educators to reach out to families and find ways to supplement student learning. The current definition of supplemental learning is that no new learning will happen (only review), students need to be able to work independently, students are not required to complete the work and the work will not be graded. This is how we will do business next week.
Starting the week of April 13th, we will be moving to a distance learning model where teachers will be required to deliver new learning to their students. Teachers will be using a variety of ways to accomplish this. You will see some teachers using Google classroom, some will use their SeeSaw app, while others will send out videos. It will be important that your child begins to interact with the learning opportunities their teacher has provided. This new learning will require some assistance from parents and students' attendance and work completed will be monitored.
Our staff returned to work yesterday in a much different way than they are accustomed to. Due to Governor Brown’s “Stay Home Save Lives” order, most of our teachers worked from home. We started our day with an all-staff meeting using Google Meets. This time was spent defining our work as we begin to plan how we will deliver this new learning opportunity to our students. Teachers were asked to make contact via phone to all of their families. If you did not hear from your child’s teacher or someone from the school, please contact the office to ensure we have your most current contact information. It is important for us to make contact with you to determine how to best meet your child’s learning needs.
Teachers are working hard planning instruction for your child. You should be receiving a newsletter from your child’s teacher by the end of the week with a solid plan of how we will begin to move forward. If you need a Chromebook we will be handing those out in our school gym on Monday and Tuesday from 9:30-11:30 and 5:00-7:00. We will currently allow two Chromebooks per family as long as there are at least two NSSD students in the family. Most students will be doing some form of online learning. Those who do not have access to reliable internet will be provided work that can be completed without using the internet. Again your child’s teacher will be in contact with you about their plan.
This is a very challenging time and we have been asked to do a type of learning/teaching we have never been asked to do before. As we begin to plan and implement our plan we would ask for your patience as we work out the bugs. We will take time each week to reflect on the previous week so that we can make adjustments and refine our plan. Please make sure to stay in regular contact with your child’s teacher. This will be the best way to ensure your child’s needs are being met.
Please do not hesitate to contact the school if you have not heard from your child’s teacher or someone from the school about their plan for your child’s learning. Again, thank you for your patience as we begin this new endeavor.
