Awards and Promotion - ALL STAFF - Please READ
8th Grade Awards Recording: Thank you, team, for completing the awards list. I know you had to make some difficult choices. Teachers who will be presenting awards will be asked to send a recording to a shared folder in the Google drive. Michelle will be sending an email, early next week, to those teachers. She and KCMS students will be creating an awards video to go along with the live broadcast we will have in the KCMS studio on June 9th at 10:00 am.
Recordings must be completed and submitted by May 29th.
Vidhug Video: ALL STAFF: We're asking all staff to record a 30 second video to say congratulations to the 8th graders (can be from your phone) that you'll send to the provided vidhug link. Be on the lookout for an email from Michelle.
Promotion Event on June 10th: 8th grade promotion plans are underway. We will be holding a drive-up promotion event starting at 10:00 am and ending around 2:00 pm. This will require staff support, and I'd like to thank Michelle, Brooke B., Amanda, and Laurie for volunteering to help with coordination.
There are several tasks requiring support - ALL staff are welcome/needed
- This week, you'll receive an email from Laurie requesting your help with a shift of time.
What will this look like?
- Students and families will arrive in their cars during a designated time frame.
- They will be in designated groups of 40. Cars will line perimeter of the school, starting on 6th St. to G Ave. to 5th St. and then stopping in front of the school.
- At that time, they will be given a large Ziplock bag holding their promotion certificate, award certificates, 8th grade photo, yearbook, and an 8th grade gift from the parent promotion donations.
- The front of the school will be decorated by the parent promotion committee with a designated area for students to take a photo. With parent permission, the student (only) will get out of their car, wearing a facemask, and will be appropriately socially distanced while they have their photo taken by CMS staff.(If social distancing norms and restrictions change prior to June 10th, we will update our community on any adjustments to our promotion ceremony. )

Mindset Quote of the Week:
“Happiness is not a matter of intensity but of balance, order, rhythm and harmony.” – Thomas Merton
California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS)
WestEd, the publishers of the California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS), have developed a survey to obtain information from students about learning from home. The questions have been adapted from the school climate survey in the CHKS core module to learn about students' mental health, stress, and coping skills during distance learning.
Student participation is voluntary. It is also very important. The information provided will help guide district and school efforts to promote safety, enhance learning supports, improve student achievement, and reduce health risks that stand as barriers to learning.
This is an anonymous survey. It is designed so that no one can be identified from the data. Students do not have to respond to any questions that they feel could be used to identify them. Instruct them to simply skip any such questions.
All questions apply to this school only.
The results are for the use of the district. CDE and WestEd will preserve data confidentiality and refer any data requests to the district.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR ACCESSING THE SURVEY

“As I reached with my fork and thrust into my mouth, I immediately recognized the putrid taste of the vegetable. It was like trying to eat dry grass and dog food, drink curdled milk, and ingest cardboard at the very same time. In addition, I started to gag; tasting the bile that was climbing up my throat. My brain went into overdrive: I tried to smile, but failed miserably and tried to re-swallow the food, but again, did not succeed. Eventually, with a will of steel and an astronomical effort not to retch, I, slowly, piece by piece, choked down the vile asparagus.”
Jack Harvey, 7th grade, Red Scarf Girl Final Essay
I sat down with 7th grader Jack Harvey to discuss the elements and style of writing.
Jack, what would you say is your most unusual writing quirk?
“[ insert very long pause…] Oh, okay, here’s one….I write my beginning, then the end, and fill in the middle last.”
What do you think makes a good writer?
“Someone who doesn’t give up, because it’s hard to do this, you know? Someone who is creative. Someone who is able to take criticism. Someone who is not just working by themselves all the time, because you have to get support from other people too.”
