Phew! This algebra business is tricky! Today we worked on lesson 4.4 which focuses on writing comparison equations to solve multiplication and division equations. Lessons 4.5-4.7 will be taught the rest of the week. In these lessons students will use comparison drawings and graphs to help them solve problems. They will also encounter two-step word problems. Thank you for help at home!
Social Studies:
We are finally rolling on our Washington Region group projects. I have already been impressed by how well students are working together and their flexibility within their teams. I cannot wait to see the posters that they create together.

Reading: We will finish up with Journeys Readers Workshop this week. Students are finishing their current Journeys book, their vocabulary lists, and end-of-book responses. They are also taking small assessments each day this week on the skills we worked on throughout the workshop including cause/effect, compare/contrast, character development, and summarizing. We will begin our poetry unit soon.
Writing: Students are currently working on the body paragraphs in their opinion essays, which outline the reasons and details supporting their thesis statement. We have been learning about various elaboration strategies including using examples, definitions, and description in our writing. This week we will also practice using precise, interesting language (including figurative language) and anecdotes.
Home-School Connection
Today we had a lockdown drill at school. A lockdown occurs when there is a perceived threat either on campus or nearby. During this drill we close blinds, lock doors, turn off the lights and sit silently in a safe area of the classroom. Your child may want to talk with you about this tonight. If you have any questions please let us know.
