Leander ISD is thrilled to announce Maggie Jistel as the new Cypress Elementary principal after the Board of Trustees approved her for the position at Thursday’s meeting.
Superintendent Bruce Gearing, Ed.D., invites the LISD community to join him in congratulating Jistel as she begins this new role.
“Maggie is a passionate leader who is focused on ensuring exceptional learning experiences for each and every student,” Gearing said. “This focus, coupled with her strong belief in supporting staff and partnering with parents, will serve the Cypress community well.”
Jistel transitions to this position from her role as assistant principal at Parkside Elementary, where she has served since 2018. She joined LISD in 2006, working as a first and fourth-grade teacher, instructional coach and eventually assistant principal at Laura Welch Bush Elementary. Before coming to LISD, she taught second grade at Humphrey’s Highland Elementary in Amarillo ISD.
“It is a privilege to serve the students, staff and community in my new role as the principal of Cypress Elementary,” Jistel said. “I feel honored to work alongside passionate and dedicated educators who are focused on creating rich learning experiences for students, and I look forward to partnering with families to build upon the rooted traditions in which Cypress is known.”
Jistel attended West Texas A&M University for her undergraduate degree, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies. She completed her Master of Education at Concordia University.

Cypress Site Based Planning Committee
Each campus within Leander ISD has a Site-Based Planning Committee (SBPC). The aim of this committee is improving the achievement of all students. These committees are composed of district employees, community members, business representatives and parents.
The SBPC members provide input to the principal on a wide variety of subjects, including planning, curriculum, budgeting, staff development, staffing patterns, school organization, and school improvements. Should you wish to nominate either yourself or someone else for a position on the SBPC, please fill out the form linked below.
Should there be a need, an election will be held to appoint positions to this invaluable team. The SBPC will hold its first meeting on Wednesday, September 28 at 4:00pm in the Cypress Conference room. Time and dates for future meetings will be discussed at the first meeting.
