Principal's Corner
Dear Parents and Guardians:
SOARS Days
October has been a busy month at Emerson. We’ve continued our implementation of Emerson’s social-emotional learning through our SOARS Days, which focus on different appropriate social skills. On October 13th, we followed an adjusted daily class schedule. During the SOARS time, 6th grade focused on Friends and Allies. The 7th grade worked on Negotiation and Compromise, while the 8th grade focused on Leaders and Allies. Students were able to discuss and identify ways to build respect and offer empathy to one another through teacher guidance.
Early Entrance
If your child needs to arrive at school early to get assistance from a teacher, he/she needs to email his/her teacher, print and fill out a morning pass, and arrive at school at 7:35am. Teachers do not arrive at school prior to 7:35 am.
Red Ribbon Week
At Emerson and throughout the country, the end of October brings Red Ribbon Week (RRW), which began on Mon., Oct. 23rd. The mission of RRW is the creation of a drug-free America. For this to occur, students need to be aware of the dangers of drugs and drug abuse, along with learning how to develop a healthy lifestyle. During this week, the whole school participates in a variety of activities and events such as: dress-up days and fun activities at lunch in support of a drug-free America. You can find more information regarding RRW at: http://redribbon.org/about/.
School Resource Officer
As we continue to keep you updated on the implementation of the School Resource Officer to Emerson, you can visit our new SRO website at: http://www.d64.org/ems/sro .
Eighth Grade Information
To eighth grade parents, the Maine South High School mathematics placement exam is scheduled for Sat., March 10, 2018. Also, eighth grade promotion will be held in the Maine East Auditorium, May 31, 2018 at 7pm.
Bus Safety Rules
For safety purposes, we are asking students not to play music out load or take photos/videos while they are on the bus. If students would like to listen to music or play video games, they need to use headphones or earbuds.
Cold Weather
As the cold weather approaches, it is important to ensure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather. The school district’s morning entry procedure has children entering the building early only when the outside temperature goes below 10°F. Students will be expected to remain outside until the regular entry time if the temperature stays above 10°F.
Report Cards
The end of trimester 1 occurs on November 10th. To ensure students’ report cards are accurate, appropriately organized and mailed home to parents, they will be sent home on Monday, November 27th. To view your child’s final grades prior to that date, you can check the parent portal during the week of November 13.
Sincerely,
Dr. Jim Morrison

Vision And Hearing
FROM THE SCHOOL HEALTH OFFICE
Students at Emerson Middle School have completed vision and hearing screening.
Parents/guardians of students who failed the vision screening criteria will be re-screened in approximately two weeks. Students may initially fail vision screening due to a temporary eye condition. You will receive notification of the need for professional evaluation if, at re-screen, the vision test is failed again. Parents/guardians of students who are presently under the care of a physician for glasses or other reasons will receive a request for a report from the eye professional for the child's school health record.
Students who fail the hearing screening are re-screened in approximately two weeks. Students may fail hearing screening because of respiratory or ear infections. Once these resolve, the child is usually successful in meeting the hearing screening criteria. If the problem persists, referral for a medical evaluation will be sent home.
