Students, Staff, and Parents Making a Difference
Breast Cancer Fundraiser
Next week CMS will hold the annual Lee Denim Day to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer. Each year, students and teachers make donations to fund breast cancer research and wear jeans and pink to bring attention to this cause. Ms. Harding and Ms. Murphy are running this year's program with lots of help from student volunteers that made posters, collected prizes for donations, and created announcements to inspire our school. This year's Lee Denim Day for Breast Cancer research will be on Wednesday, October 24th. So wear pink, make a donation, and help us "pink out" cancer!Gray Out for Natalia
This past week, CMS helped to raise funds for CMS alum Natalia Donnelly who was recently diagnosed with a brain tumor. Students were able to purchase a gray paper ribbon for $1 that will be displayed during tonight's volleyball game. Today, students and staff did a "gray out" to bring awareness to brain cancer. We wish Natalia the best and know that she will fight hard and stay strong during this tough battle! She knows that CMS has her back!
DonorsChoose and Alternative Seating
A couple of week's ago I sent out a post about one of our teacher's Donors Choose sites. Since that time four other teachers have created DonorsChoose sites as well for alternative seating options for our students. Two of those sites have been fully funded and the other two are very close. I never cease to be amazed by the generosity of the Norwood community! Below are some pictures from Ms. Silva's science classroom - the first to be fully funded.
Alternative and flexible seating is where schools replace standard student desks with a variety of more comfortable and more flexible seating choices. It may include balance balls, wobble seats (that allow for movement), crate seats, tables, and many other choices. The concept is that students work better where they are comfortable. As I said to my staff when first describing this concept - When I have a lot of work to do and want to really focus, I don't go looking for a hard, Formica desk attached to a chair!
Thank you to everyone who has donated (and will be donating) to the great causes we are supporting this month! Allowing students to be part of a community of giving let's them know what it means to be a good community member - something that is clearly important to Norwood!
