The Buzz at Westbrook
March 6, 2020
From the Principal...
Dear Westbrook Families,
What a fun week! We celebrated our love of reading this week. All of our students also had the opportunity to see a fabulous assembly called the ProKids Show. The show included magic, comedy, music, and more! The presenter, Tim Hannig, talked about the importance of showing great character by caring for and appreciating each other, working collaboratively, showing respect, and being responsible. Not only was it a great message for our students, but they loved his magic, his puppet named Vern, and having the chance to participate. Thank you to our PTO for organizing and sponsoring this show for us!! It was a BIG hit!
Celebration of Reading
We celebrated our love for reading with two Hot Reads! During Hot Reads, all staff members bring their favorite book to the gym. One lucky staff member gets picked to read in front of the school in the morning and one in the afternoon. Mrs. Kara McCarthy, literacy support specialist, and Ms. Elena Coughlin, first grade teacher, were picked to read in front of everyone! They read the book Can I Be Your Dog? by Troy Cummings. The story follows Arfy, a dog who is looking for his forever home, as he writes letters asking people to adopt him by sharing all of his admirable attributes. It has such a sweet ending and matches perfectly with one of our school-wide expectations of being kind. On this day, our first graders also spread kindness throughout Mount Prospect by writing thoughtful notes for others on this day!
This week, our students and staff also participated in Drop Everything and Read! No matter what staff and students were doing, they were asked to stop what they were doing and start reading! The kids loved reading in front of “fireplaces” in first grade, reading with their art, music, and PE teachers, and reading with friends!

A Note from the District 57 Education Foundation
The District 57 Education Foundation is a non-profit organization comprised of Mount Prospect community members whose mission is to raise money to fund grants in the areas of curriculum, wellness, and technology.
Grant requests may be written and submitted by district teachers, staff, and parents. The grants enrich the educational experiences of all students, helping them to achieve at their highest potential. Funded grants allow teachers to have access to the resources they need to support teaching and learning at Westbrook, Lions Park, Fairview, and Lincoln schools.
Over the years, the Foundation has funded computers, iPads, ELMO projectors, Smartboards, musical instruments, art supplies, fitness equipment, and supplemental reading material - all to enrich our children’s educational experiences. We are currently in the Spring Grant Request Cycle. A description of the grant request submission process and form is located within the Grants section of our website at https://www.57edfoundation.org. Grant requests for this cycle are due by 4/3/2020 and can be sent to this email address: d57edfoundationgrants@gmail.com
Parent community members who are interested in submitting a grant request should contact the school principal to which the grant will benefit.
