Dynamic Broncos Weekly Update

November 17th - 21st

Hello third grade families! I hope you are staying warm through this wintry weather. This last week of school before Thanksgiving vacation will be a busy one. Please read on to find out more about what is in store.

Tuesday, Nov. 18th, 8:45am

5901 Southwest Pkwy

Austin, TX

Please send your child to school tomorrow in formal dress for St. Andrew's Day!

Boys should wear a coat and tie and girls should wear a dress and tights or slacks. Please be sure to send your child with a warm coat. We will be having lunch outside!

Reading Workshop

We are getting to be experts at putting ourselves in our character's shoes. This week we are moving onto using what we know about characters to help us make predictions about what we imagine they might do, say, or feel.

We have been steadily building our reading stamina over these first twelve weeks of school. As we move into our 3rd six weeks of third grade, nightly reading will increase from 20-30 minutes to 25-35 minutes each night. Please continue to support your children in reading each night and logging their reading.

Writing Workshop

Third graders are growing so much as authors! Last week we studied Karen Hesse's book Come On Rain, to discover what this famous published author did so well as a storyteller to draw her readers in. Third graders noticed that Hesse:

* used the exact words that characters said;

* described how the characters said their words (whispered, breathed, shouted);

* used descriptive details and words; and

* told the story bit by bit.

This week we will talk about how writers find the heart of their story (the most important part) and slow that part down by adding details.

This week we are beginning our fourth unit of vocabulary. Please visit the vocabulary website this week with your child to explore our new words! We will have our assessment on Wednesday, December 3rd, after Thanksgiving break.

We continue our study of addition. This week we will delve into strategies for regrouping numbers in the ones, tens and hundreds place.

Report Cards

Report cards will be coming home on Wednesday afternoon. Please be sure to check your child's backpack for the envelope.

A note about this grading period - You may notice that your child's grades in some subjects have dropped slightly from the first six week's report card. This may be apparent, especially in the areas of reading and writing. Our work in third grade has ramped up and evolved since the initial weeks of school and academic demands have increased. If you have questions about your child's grades please do not hesitate to contact me.
