Random Acts of Kindness Week - Thank You!
A huge thank you to Mrs. Luberger, student council and the PTA program chairs Sara Norwood (Preston-PreK and Stella-2nd) and Janae Gardner (MJ-2nd ) for Random Acts of Kindness Week.
It was an awesome week, and we will continue the emphasis on Acts of Kindness through the year.
MWE Playground Committee
The MWE Playground Committee has been meeting to gather input and make recommendations for new playground equipment for our school. Their work includes doing a survey, meeting with architects and child development specialists, as well as visiting other parks and fundraising. The Committee plans to meet several times before the end of the school year, as well as over the summer.
Annie Ickes (Eli-K and Luke-2nd) has taken over as Committee Chair, replacing Sara Norwood (Preston-PreK and Stella-2nd) who is moving.
Urge Lawmakers to Support Public School Finance Reform!
In May 2016, the Texas Supreme Court upheld the state's public school funding ystem, but urged state lawmakers to implement "transformational, top-to-bottom reforms that amount to more than Band-Aid on top of Band-Aid."
Now is the time to take action and tell lawmakers to support school finance reform. Texas PTA has created a campaign that allows you to send an email, tweet, facebook post, or place a phone call to your representatives with the click of a button. See below for the link. Take a few moments to:
- Urge lawmakers to become familiar with the proposed plans and to work with their colleagues to fix school finance this session.
- Take a moment to explain that maintaining the current system is not acceptable to taxpayers or the students of Texas.
- Acknowledge that we are in a tighter fiscal environment this year, but there will never be a perfect time to address this critical issue.
Use your voices to #backthefuture of Texas children!
Chronic Absenteeism
We have learned that Chronic Absenteeism is defined by the Texas Education Agency being absent for more than 10% of the school year. Students attend school for 178 days, so 10% of that would be approximately 17 days. As of February 10, 2017,
- we have 5 students with 17 or more absences.
- 20 students with 10-16 absences; and
- 36 students with 8 - 10 absences.
For the 2016-2017 school year, so far, we have had 2 days with perfect attendance for students: August 22nd and August 23rd.
All student absences will count toward chronic absenteeism - both excused and unexcused.

From SBISD Operations:
