CJH Connections

An update for parents and families

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Hi everyone!

Congratulations on making it to the month of October. September and the start of school were very busy, but we are excited to have established what school looks like this year. Our staff did a wonderful job preparing for the arrival of students and our students did a great job settling into our new normal. To that end, we spent the last few weeks conducting schoolwide lessons, and have now launched our CORE/FLEX intervention model.

We continue to operate with our COVID safety protocols in place while having all students back in school. I'm proud of the work we do to keep students safe, while also conducting in-person learning. Whether in common spaces or in classrooms, I have no doubt that we will continue to improve on things in the weeks to come.

Mid-quarter progress is today, which means students are halfway into the first quarter of the year. Now is the perfect time to talk with your child about how the year is going - academically, socially, and emotionally. Although this year is a bit different from previous years, some things haven't changed. We are here to support, so please don't hesitate to reach out.

Whatever it takes!

October is here!

Important dates:

  • Tuesday, October 5 - Mid-quarter progress
  • Friday, October 8 - No school - Staff Professional Learning Day
  • Monday, October 18 - Picture make-up/retakes

What is CORE/FLEX?

After wrapping up the last three weeks of school-wide lessons, we were able to reinstitute our CORE/FLEX model this past week. CORE/FLEX is a 26-minute intervention period 4 days per week (Tues through Fri) based on a student's current academic progress. It is designed to provide time within the school day so that we can meet student's individual needs. Click on this presentation link to get more information.

Fall state assessment coming soon!

Due to COVID, last spring's state assessments were postponed to this fall. Beginning October 12th, both 8th and 9th grade students will begin the process of taking the Smarter Balanced Assessment in ELA and math (and the WCAS for current 9th graders). Each assessment will take place in that corresponding class (e.g. math will test during math), and we have worked to minimize the amount of disruption to the normal school day. Read the attached letter for more details.

Picture retake/make-up day

If your child missed picture day in September, or if you'd like retakes, we have another picture day in October. It will be held on the morning of Monday, October 18th.

Big picture

Healthy Youth Survey in 2021

CJH will be administering the Healthy Youth Survey online in November. The Healthy Youth Survey (HYS) is a collaborative effort of the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction, the Department of Health, the Department of Social and Health Service's Division of Behavioral Health and Recovery, and the Liquor and Cannabis Board.

The survey provides important information about youth in Washington. County prevention coordinators, community mobilization coalitions, community public health and safety networks, and others use this information to guide policy and programs that serve youth. The information from the Healthy Youth Survey can be used to identify trends in the patterns of behavior over time. Feel free to click on the PDF below for more information.

Essential items

Transportation information

Buses will be running on our normal bus schedule. You can go to the transportation department's webpage on the Fife Public Schools website.

Student Drop Off: If your child gets dropped off in the morning, please know that we use the drive-through area in front of the CJH main office. Please remember to be safe and patient as students arrive at school each day.

Free and Reduced Meal Application Form

Both new and returning students who wish to apply for free and/or reduced meals should click the link to the application below. The Free and Reduced Meal form must be completed every year to qualify. This form also provides access to free or reduced fees for things like SAT/ACT, AP exams, college entrance fees, and some school activity costs.

Completed applications can be submitted to the CJH main office, but also can be emailed back to Toni Barnett at tbarnett@fifeschools.com or mailed or delivered to Fife School District office.

  • The English & Spanish version of the Food Program application and the household letter can be found @ Fifeschools.com, Departments, Food Service, Free and Reduced Lunch Info

Returning Students

Returning students maintain their prior year’s free or reduced eligibility for the first 30 school days, or until a new application is processed. If a returning student does not have a new application processed by October 15, 2021, they will automatically be transferred to a paid account on the next school day. Families are responsible for any charges incurred.

Please notify Toni Barnett, Manager of Food Services (253.517.1000) if a returning student has a newly enrolled sibling so that we may extend the 30 school day eligibility to the new student. Families will still need to complete a new application to avoid any unnecessary charges.

COVID-19 UPDATES

Information and updates regarding COVID-19 are coming at a fast pace as we receive guidance from the health department and elected officials. We will use this page to share updates and resources!

Nurse's Office update

In our last parent newsletter, we discussed the procedure for providing Proof of COVID 19 Vaccination. In this edition of CJH Connections, we would like to mention the balance of keeping students home if they are feeling sick, how to prioritize symptoms, and what testing might look like as we move forward.

Simply put, if your child has any symptoms that indicate being sick, we need families to assume the possibility of COVID, so that we can best navigate how to best move forward. If in doubt, reach out to our school nurses prior to sending a student with symptoms to school.

As you saw in Superintendent Alfano's recent communication, we will be sending out more information regarding COVID testing in the next few weeks.

If any time you have questions or need to contact one of our school nurses, contact the CJH main office at 253-517-1600, or email them directly at:
