Summer PD Offerings
Curriculum & Instruction, 2018
What is this?
It’s an ages-old statement: teachers don’t take summers off…because so many of you are still working! You plan, read, participate in PD, and get ready for the upcoming school year. As central office folks, we recognize this summer work and want to help Buckeye teachers receive credit for their time. If it were feasible, we would love to compensate each of you for everything you do outside of the school day, and while that may not be within our purview to do, we can offer opportunities for graduate credit and contact hours. We’ve come up with a few ideas for “courses” based on what we think might be helpful, but please share any ideas you may have (using this form) and we can try to offer other opportunities as well!
Use this Google Calendar (http://bit.ly/BLSSummerPD) to view all summer dates for opportunities. (You will need to be logged into your @buckeyeschools.org account to access) . Calendar will be updated as additional opportunities are made available.

Young Adult Reads — Summer Reading
If you’ll be reading young adult books this summer, why not earn hours towards your license renewal by helping us build a Buckeye Schools Teacher-Review database? For each book you read, earn 3 contact hours by completing this YA Review Form and share the completed form with Christina Collins. Completed forms will be kept in a gDrive folder and shared with interested teachers. You will receive a contact hour certificate for each completed form. Let Christina know you're planning to participate here.

Teachers will be able to choose from a menu of options based on individual preferences and needs (to preview these options, see the descriptions here). ****Additional tasks may be added depending on the needs of participants. Suggestions welcome!****Let Amy know you're participating and whether you'll want contact hours or graduate credit using this form.

The Power of Primary Sources
Using primary sources with students has untapped potential for expanding and deepening the reading experiences of elementary and middle grade students. Primary sources expand a teachers’ palette of reading materials, allows students to connect more closely to topics for learning, and deepens their understanding of the past. This PD session with Janice will explore how to integrate primary sources into the history and ELA classroom and will offer a variety of resources for teachers to find and plan activities for students.
- Meeting Date: August 2
- Meeting Time: 8:30 - 3:30
- Contact Hours Available: 10
- Register by July 15: Contact Hour Registration
Junior Great Books / Socratic Seminar Method
The purpose of this course is to introduce you to the method and materials used in the programs of the Great Books Foundation. The shared inquiry method of learning inspires deeper thinking through reading and discussion. It’s roots lie in the Socratic method. Participants will learn how to ask probing questions that let students respond with their own ideas, supported with text evidence. Even if you are not utilizing materials from the Great Books Foundation, the socratic method can be used with literature you are already using in your classroom. Come join Janice to learn how to boost your questioning skills!
- Meeting Date: August 7
- Meeting Time: 8:30-3:30
- Contact Hours available: 10 (Counts towards HQPD for Gifted teachers)
- Register by July 15: Contact Hour Registration

Though not for contact hours or graduate credit (unless attending as part of the Tech-Enhanced Learning course), central office staff will be available on Tuesdays throughout the summer to help with any instructional needs. Availability will be from 8:30 - 11:30 in the Elementary Library. If you are planning to attend, please use this form to let us know. These meetings are extremely informal and teachers are welcome to stop in any time between these hours; however, if no one is registered for a given day, there may not be anyone available.

- Gifted / Data: Janice
- Special Education: Nancy
- Technology: Amy (Need help learning software? An app? Need support integrating a tech tool into your lesson? Just want to vent about tech? Drop in Tuesday mornings during this open time to receive support with technology.)
Additional Information
If I don't take it now, will it be offered again?
If there’s interest, we’re happy to offer courses again in the future and on future inservice days or late arrivals. Please use this form (http://bit.ly/BLSSuggestions) and we will gauge interest.
Why do some offerings have a cost?
Costs are associated with offerings only if you choose to get graduate credit or if you have to buy your own book. Contact hours are free.
Is it possible to voluntarily attend a training that others are paid to attend?
Some trainings are required for certain people because of their teaching assignment. In these cases, we will pay those teachers to attend. However, it is our goal to open these trainings up to anyone interested in voluntarily attending. For this summer, these include…
- Special Education training in August
- Gifted Nature and Needs training in August
Voluntary attendance at either of these meetings is by teacher’s choice, and does not mean there will be any changes in teaching responsibilities.
Don't forget LPDC!
You will need to submit activities for approval to LPDC in order for graduate credits or contact hours to count towards your license renewal. Since these are summer offerings, you should still input them for approval, and LPDC can review and approve them when they resume meetings this fall.
