Student Learning In and Out of the Classroom
As we switch from one month to the next, I always look back and reflect on what we did during the previous month, and I can tell you October was a month that we did a lot. We had spirit week, our homecoming activities, and multiple music concerts. Nearly all of the fall sports teams completed their seasons, and students and staff worked hard in the classroom to become better thinkers and learners. We also had parent teacher conferences, announced the Excellence in Athletics fundraising campaign to turf Catan Stadium and the new middle school field, and conducted both PSAT and OGT testing.
All of these activities and events make for a busy month, but they also showcase the many things we do to educate the whole child and create learning experiences on a variety of fronts. We know that our students can learn valuable lessons both inside and outside of the classroom. All of these experiences help make students who they are and help them grow into mature young men and women. I hope you and your children enjoyed our many activities as much as we did. It was truly a blast!
As always, thank you for allowing us the opportunity to provide your child their high school education.
November's Featured Teacher: Mrs. Alyssa Hoslar
Position: High School Math Teacher (Algebra I and Precalculus)
Education: Bachelor of Science in Education and Masters of Arts in Mathematics
Years at SHS: This is my 8th year.
Family: I am married to my high school sweetheart, have a Sheltie named Lucy and a cat named Linus, and have twin boys on the way!
Additional Contributions (Teaching): I have presented at local, state and national math conferences. I've been published in two National Math Journals: Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School and an Ohio math journal. For the past six years, I've been an advisor for Key club, and I've been a mentor for the Strongsville Youth Commission for two years.
Why did you decide to be a teacher? Honestly, I love helping people. My first job when I was in high school was giving music lessons. I worked at a little drum shop and gave piano, clarinet, bassoon and saxophone lessons. My second year I had a clarinet student who went to solo and ensemble contest. We worked so hard on her piece. I even accompanied her on the piano during her solo. She received a rating of a one which is the highest rating. I was so incredibly proud of her and all that we accomplished together. It was during this time that I realized I wanted to teach. I wanted to influence and push others to become the best that they could become. I wanted to be a part of their growth experience. This is my 8th year of teaching, and I am so thankful I made the decision to teach!
What do you like best about teaching? I love getting to know my students. I enjoy the interactions we have in the classroom and getting to see their personalities.
What might students be surprised to learn about you? When I was in high school I dived on the diving team. This only lasted two years. I figured my luck in not hitting the board would run out and that I'd better stop while I was ahead! Also, I was the vice president of the band my senior year.
Thank you, Mrs. Hoslar, for all you do to make SHS a great school!
