DURHAM NOCKAMIXON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, APRIL EDITION
A Word From the Principal...
At Durham Nockamixon Elementary School, we believe in working together with parents to combat bullying. We know this problem isn’t confined to school grounds. Bullying at school affects and is affected by what happens at home between siblings, what happens in the neighborhood, and what happens when kids go online. We must work together to take immediate action, whether a child bullies, is a victim of bullying, or is a witness to bullying.
Our youngsters at the elementary level have been raised in the age of digital technology. In light of this, the faculty of Durham Nockamixon have begun participating in professional development on how best to support and educate our students on the responsible use of the internet and electronic devices. Recently, NOVA (Network of Victim Assistance) provided a presentation for our fifth grade students on the topic of cyber bullying. Please find the handout attached for your reference.
The below message is worthy Information to share on this topic:
On July 10, 2015, Governor Wolf signed Act 26 of 2015 into law, resulting in the creation of a new crime: Cyber Harassment of a Child (18 PA.C.S. §2709 (a.1)). Cyber harassment of a child is committed when another person repeatedly contacts a child through electronic means (such as through text messages, instant messages or through social media services) with the intent to harass, annoy or alarm the child and makes seriously harmful comments about the child or threatens to harm the child.
It is helpful for families to be aware of the law. Parents, please discuss household rules about online activity with your children, and remind them not to engage in mean, harmful messages about or to others.
Please encourage your child to be an UPSTANDER:
- Support the person being cyberbullied.
- Refuse to pass along messages.
- Tell anyone who supports the cyberbullying to stop.
- Block communications with cyberbullies.
Working together, we can ensure that our students are responsibly using and interacting with digital technology.

WORLD DOWN SYNDROME DAY CELEBRATED!
On Monday, March 21, 2016 students of Durham Nockamixon Elementary School celebrated “World Down Syndrome Day” with the help of Mr. O’Donnell and Miss. Godiksen’s 5th grade class. The students formed teams to work together cooperatively in order to conduct research and prepare appropriate grade level materials accompanied by activities suitable for their audience. Students visited classrooms at every grade level across the building. Our 5th grade students worked with teachers to identify the best presentation time for each classroom’s schedule. Presentations ranged from 15 - 20 minutes in length. While honing their presentations skills students taught all of us what it means to be compassionate and inclusive. The day truly taught us all the importance of embracing our differences!
