Pencil Drive for Belize

Omicron Delta Kappa collects art supplies to help students

Pencils, crayons can be dropped off at 425 Wells Hall

Most of us don't think twice about pulling a pencil out of our backpacks to take notes in class. But what if you didn't have a pencil?

That's the situation some students in Belize may face every day. Several years ago when a contingent of Murray State University education students finished their student teaching, one student wrote in a reflective statement that the lack of good pencils for her students came as a surprise.

Bonnie Higginson, an ODK member and professor emeritus of education who leads the student teaching delegation, discussed the Pencil Drive with Omicron Delta Kappa members Monday night. ODK has conducted successful pencil drives in the past for the Belize program. She estimated that the MSU delegation has distributed thousands of pencils since beginning the ODK Pencil Drive program.

"I think it's made an amazing difference," Higginson said.

Higginson said crayons and colored pencils also may be included with the pencil drive. At least two other delegations from Murray State will travel to Belize later this spring and fall to distribute supplies.

ODK will collect pencils, crayons and colored pencils now through April 30. Donations may be dropped off at the Office of Student Affairs, 425 Wells Hall.
