Walk A Mile in my Shoes
Walk a mile in my shoes.
See what I see--
Hear what I hear--
Then maybe you’ll understand why I do what I do.
I am excited to introduce a schoolwide reading experience that will foster and promote a community of readers at Lopez Middle School while also celebrating our diversity. The goal is to encourage empathy, perspective, and acceptance by prompting Panthers to read books, both fiction and non-fiction, about people who are different from themselves. By immersing ourselves in the stories of others, we can better understand the paths they choose to follow and experience what it means to “WALK A MILE IN MY SHOES”,our theme.
Walk a Mile is an opportunity to build communities of readers at Lopez: in classrooms, through clubs and organizations, on athletic teams, with friends, teachers, and coworkers. Each team’s goal is to read 5,280 minutes, the same number of feet in a mile, throughout the 2018-2019 school year. For example, each member on a team of 15 readers will need to read 17 minutes a day, 5 days a week, during the school year to help their team meet the goal.
During the month of October, students will make teams of no more than 15 readers.Smaller teams are welcome, too! Team captains will register the team on the Lopez Library webpage, pick up a swag bag of goodies to get the team started, and encourage their teammates to come to the library to check out books. Books will be on display to provide suggestions for your book selections.
Reading for minutes officially begins October 1, 2018 and continues until February 8, 2019. Teams will be encouraged to stop in the Lopez Library to check out books throughout the year. Any team that participates in the Walk a Mile, and achieves their 5,280 minute goal will be joining us for a celebration on Friday, February 22, 2019.
Thanks for all of your support in building up a community of readers at Lopez Middle School !
