Friday Focus
Baywood Elementary - October 14, 2016
Mrs. Dinielli's Message
With our school year well underway and kids settled into the routines of daily classroom life and workshop, it is important to maintain that enthusiasm that we kicked off the school year with! Many of you are taking pause with an end of unit celebration in reading or writing. Please invite me to these celebrations- I love to attend these times where the learning is the celebration!
Teachers- You are starting to receiving emails and information about conferences, grading and report cards. I am compiling much of it together here for you and will add these links to our Team Baywood Staff Website on the Curriculum & Assessment link.
Writing Scoring Days:
8:15-2:30 @ DO, Bring your On Demand Assessments, Pathways and your Next Unit
1st Grade: Tuesday, 10/18
2nd Grade Wednesday, 10/19
3rd Grade Thursday, 10/20
4th Grade Tuesday, 10/25
5th Grade, Thursday 10/27
Report Cards
We are working to get the report cards ready for data entry early next week. The grading window is temporarily opened to do some testing and training. Please do not enter grades. You may lose your work. Darla will email early next week when the official grading window opens and the report cards are ready for grade entry.
K-2 Teachers
October is the month for K-2 reading and writing common assessments.
BAS
Please be sure to complete the BAS for your students and enter their letter levels into the BAS 2016-17 illuminate assessment in the 16-17 BAS T1 column.
You will notice there are columns for other data points, such as fluency, accuracy... these are optional items, check with your school site to determine if your site is collecting this additional data.
Need help with the data entry? Check out this BAS Data Entry help document, it references 15-16, but the same instructions work for the 16-17 assessment.
Writing On-Demand
Please be sure that all students take the Post On-Demand Writing assessment for narrative writing this month. 1st-5th grade teachers will meet to calibrate and score papers in the coming weeks. Kinder and 6th grade teachers will be scoring onsite. Once your papers are scored, enter your student Scale Scores (with the point 5s, as needed) into the illuminate assessment Writing On-Demand K-6 Narrative 16-17 into the SS column. No need to worry about entering anything into the date or version columns, just be sure to enter the actual writing score with the point 5s, if needed.
Need help with the data entry? Check out this Data Entry for Writing Scores help document.
Additional assessment resources for your grade level report cards can be found in the SBG ELA Skills and in the SBG Standard 9 folders.
This week you received an envelope with a class set of Math Trimester 1 Assessments for your grade level. As you know, these are our common assessments in math. You may also know that they were developed by SLCUSD teachers using the Bridges Number Corner Checkups. They replace the Number Corner Checkup 1-4 Assessments. There are only three of them, instead of four, to match our trimesters.
Please be sure to assess your students before the end of the trimester. The results should help to inform student grades for the trimester. You will also use unit assessments and checkpoints to help determine a student's math grade. The T1 math grading sheets in the report card handbook/SBG Math Assessment folder for your grade level identify all of the items a teacher might use for grading.
How do I report the student results for this common assessment?
Teachers will use the illuminate Math T1 Assessment to record student item detail. The illuminate assessment works like the 11x17 paper scoring guide. It takes entered item scores and groups them together to provide teachers with domain information needed for grading.
It is an easy process, please view the Math Trimester Assessment Data Entry in illuminate help document in the SBG Math Trimester Assessments Folder.
Please be sure to enter your data by Friday, November 4th.
Can I do this with the Bridges unit assessments, too?
If you love using the illuminate Math T1 assessment, check out the other Bridges unit assessments that have also been set up for teacher use in illuminate. Simply go to theAssessment tab, List Assessments, and search Bridges to find unit assessments available to you:
Like the T1 assessment, the unit assessments will sort your data into domains for easy grading using the matrix report. These are not common assessments, they are for classroom use/grading only.
3-5 Teachers
October is the month for 3-6 reading and writing common assessments.
SRI
Please be sure to complete the SRI for your students by Nov. 3rd. IS&T will upload your scores into SRI illuminate each Friday in the month of October.
Writing On-Demand
Please be sure that all students take the Post On-Demand Writing assessment for narrative writing this month. 1st-5th grade teachers will meet to calibrate and score papers in the coming weeks. Kinder and 6th grade teachers will be scoring onsite. Additional ELA assessment resources for your grade level report cards can be found in the SBG ELA Trimester Assessments (3rd and 4th grade have been updated!) and in the SBG Standard 9 folders.
Please note: New assessment resources are available for standard 9 in the SBG folder RL.9 (3-6). These are short checkpoints for standard 9 and a few other standards. The Reading Lit Checkpoints are available online in illuminate, too! I think these might answer the question of what to do about standard 9 in T1?
This week you received an envelope with a class set of Math Trimester 1 Assessments for your grade level. As you know, these are our common assessments in math. You may also know that they were developed by SLCUSD teachers using the Bridges Number Corner Checkups. They replace the Number Corner Checkup 1-4 Assessments. There are only three of them, instead of four, to match our trimesters.
They are now available as paperless ONLINE assessments that the student can complete by logging into the illuminate student portal. If you choose to go paperless, please send the assessments back to ISLA for future use.
How do I report the student results for this common assessment if I use the paper assessments?
Teachers will use the illuminate Math T1 Assessment to record student item detail. The illuminate assessment works like the 11x17 paper scoring guide. It takes entered item scores and groups them together to provide teachers with domain information needed for grading.
It is an easy process, please view the Math Trimester Assessment Data Entry in illuminate help document in the SBG Math Trimester Assessments Folder.
Please be sure to enter your data by Friday, November 4th.
How do I give/score an assessment online in illuminate?
Students log in to the illuminate portal using their Google login. Review the online testing instructions to see how to set up a testing session.
Can I do this with the Bridges unit assessments, too?
